Duragloss 501 issues

This is a new product for me. I'm winterizing my black Honda S2K. Instead of using a pre-wax cleanser, I thought I'd try out DG 501, killing two birds with one stone. I also thought I'd apply it with my Meguiar's dual action polisher. Now this was my first time applying a synthetic sealant with my polisher. I've always applied protectants by hand. I know it's slower, but I enjoy the experience of hand waxing.

I taped up my car and began to apply the 501. I used a finishing pad at speed 3. Everything seemed to go alright. I think I may have applied too much sealant on the pad initially--I poured a circle of product and basically did the entire hood. From that point on I used two pea drops per panel (approximately).

When I had finished the car, I noticed that the sealant had already hazed on the hood, so I began to buff off by hand. Here is where I had problems. It just wouldn't buff off completely. I can't find the words to describe the look. Speckling? I finally had to re-apply the 501 by hand, which I then immediately buffed off. This removed the speckling.

Did I simply use too much product? I thought I was applying it pretty thinly, certainly more thinly than I would have achieved by hand application. But I'm now to the application of sealants by machine, so what the heck do I know?

Has anyone had any issues with DG 501? Any suggestions for me? TIA.

Are you dealing with some sort of contamination that may have fallen on the estookay recently?

501 has always been a very consistent product for me, but doesn't replace contamination removal via claying. Never once had a problem, but lets try to narrow it down.

Very strange though, I tend to use 501 with a white or orange pad only to help "clean" mechanically where I don't feel a finishing pad would do what I wanted but finishing pads are fine otherwise.

I don't think it was contamination. I think it was the sealant that had hardened up on me. As I said, when I re-applied the sealant by hand, the ____ (whatever it was--hard to describe the pattern; speckling ain't right but I can't think of another word for it, maybe "swirling") disappeared). It was annoying having to re-do half the car by hand.

Could it have been the previously applied wax?

No doubt it was user error; but heck if I can figure out what I did wrong. Maybe I applied it too thick, but at the time I thought I was applying it pretty thinly.

Sounds like you used to much product. I never had the issue using my DA with either a white or black LC pad speed 3-4 and letting haze, just need to apply thin. You should try mixing 4oz 501 & 1oz of 601, apply with a finishing pad speed 4 and just a little bit of pressure almost like using a finishing polish and buff off after each panel. This has been my method since Richy told us about the mixing and lately I bumped the speed from 3-4 and added just a little more pressure then the machine itself and found it leaves an amazing finish, buff off after each panel makes it soo easy to use.

"Ghosting" sounds like an apt term.

Question: how much DG 501 should I apply to the finishing pad initially?

I have a decent amount of experience with the product. To prime, I find all you need is about three to four dime size dots spread all around the pad is plenty. I also find it works MUCH better on a white (polishing) pad. Each addition panel requires about another dime sized drop. Also make sure to shake the crap out of the bottle.

I just cracked my 501 bottle on the bottom today - awesome.

This is one of the reasons I like polishing pads with 501. If I used a finishing pad, I feel like they have a tendency to keep all the product(and the cleaned off material) near the face of contact which in my eyes can lead to some ghosting and gumming up. With a polishing pad I make a liberal X shape then maybe 2-3 dots per section as I work the paint.
