Durability of Griot's 6" 3rd Gen

Broceratops

Jake Dillard
I have only used a DeWalt direct drive for paint correction at work. I am close to pulling the trigger on a Griots 3rd gen 6 inch DA. Everything I have read, seen from experienced detailers is great, however, I have also seen a lot of comments such as "mine only lasted 6 months" and "Great polisher but it is now dead" and things of that nature.

My questions.
1. How long would you expect one to last if used properly?
2. Do you think it is the operator of the tool, or simply the internals that are the main cause of failures?

Thank you ahead of time for any advice you have!

Ive torn up 3 of them, but its used daily and I'm way harder on equipment than anyone I know. I show a polisher no mercy lol. Also being mobile, my equipment is dragged in and out of the truck, thrown around, and just generally abused in every way possible. Griots has stood behind their machines 100% every time, and replaced them with no questions asked. They have the best warranty in the industry, and they are very powerful and very capable machines for a standard dual action. I do suggest also getting a 5 inch backing plate for it and running 5.5 inch pads. It does well with 6.5 inch, but it performs much better and is easier to control with 5.5

Get it wherever you find the best price on a reputable site. I think I got mine here on Autopia in a bundle. No questions asked when mine broke. Had a new machine within two weeks from my door, back to my door.

Just ordered one!!! I got the 25 foot cord. Now I need to order a 5'' backing plate, some compound, some polishes and some pads.

I know there are 1000 different compounds and polishes, and probably another 1000 threads on here regarding them.

I am still going to ask a few questions! In before "try the search tool"

At work we use DeWalt direct drive buffers with wool and foam pads. One of the compounds we use is Wizard's Turbo Cut. It dries quickly, hardens, dusts like crazy and is difficult to clean up. I detail for an auto auction fyi. Switching to a DA, using 5" pads instead of 9", and using microfiber instead of wool...I have no idea how to compare or assess different compounds and polishes. Im looking at the Megs 105, HD Cut, HD Uno and Megs Ultimate compound. My question is..with the griots and 5" microfiber pads for cutting...how abrasive would you recommend going while stile maintaing a conservative approach?

Edit: I am going to be using this for personal projects and clients seperate from work. This wont be replacing the gear I use at work.

If your looking at the HD line, forget Uno and go for Adapt. Its one of the best one step products on the market. HD Cut is good but tends to dust. HD polish is a great finishing polish, but it also tends to dust some. HD Speed is a killer all in one polish and is my go to AIO. There is also Meguires, Blackfire, Poorboys, Sonax...the list literally goes on for days. I'll put it this way..if ACC sells it, its gonna be a good product. You'll never want to touch Wizard stuff again ;)
