dumb wax question

jason rawls

Weekend Warrior
I was wondering if washing a car immediately after waxing it will have any negative effects on the curing process.

I seem to have a problem with wax residue "mysteriously" showing back up here and there the next day or so. :dunno Even after I double or tripple check to make sure I've removed all of it, I still have this problem from time to time. Does anybody else ever have this problem? I'm thinking that the best way to overcome this would be to just re-wash the vehicle but I'm concerned that it may have an adverse effect on the wax by not letting it cure for 24 hours.

What do you guys think?

I would suggest following up the next day with a quick detailer. This will give the wax time to cure and will help cleanup up any areas you missed.:)

Oh, and one other thing, there is no such thing as a stupid question. There are a lot of excelent detailers in this forum to learn from. I've already learned tons and stilll learning along the way.:band

Ive had to drive mine (shortly after removing topper) and then it rain'd on her, .....i dry'd it and use a q'd on it and no problems..

This isn't really going to be an option. Actually what I'm trying to do is work out all the kinks in my detailing procedures so I can start a small side business for the weekends. I've been doing family and friends vehicles lately and then going back later to critique my work, and this is one of the problems I have noticed on the light colored cars that I do (hard to see imperfections). It seems no matter how hard I try, I cant' seem to remove every last piece of dust and residue which is really aggravating and embarrasing. Perfection is what I'm striving for before I start charging people good money. Hopefully I'll get it right with a little more experience.

Your not the only one. :lmfao

It seems like by the time I have gotten every part perfect and gotten all the wax out of the cracks it's time to wax again. :lmfao

You could try rewashing the car just prior to applying the final sealant or wax, this will get all the dust from the previous steps off the car.

Most (of the better) wax companies recommend NOT getting their waxes or sealants wet for at least a few hours after application (including QD's). The Beretta I did a month or so ago was so loaded with dust after the 2nd #82 step (which followed 2 DACP buffings), that I HAD to wash before applying the NXT.

The dust made by polishing products is so light that it will fall into every crack & crevice there is, and something as simple as closing the car door can send up clouds of it. Not to forget the static electricity built up by buffing will attract every speck of dust in a 5 square mile area (only slightly kidding).

probably you could get one of those standing halogen lamps to assist you. It'll show the swirls and wax residue :)

jason,

What product(s) are you having this problem with? Are you using an applicator that is too damp? Is it extremely humid after applying the product? Are you using too much product?

I've been using Ex-P lately but it's usually a pretty easy product to remove. It is very humid down here where I live though so maybe it makes it a little more difficult than normal. I detailed my step mom's silver Accord the other week and when they came over yesterday to see the new baby, I went outside and had a peek at it. And of course what did I find - small patches of residue here and there. :ranton And to think I was so proud of my work when I had finished.

If there is moisture in the wax/sealant, it will haze up (show residue) when the moisture is finally gone.

I think it might be the ex-p. I remember reading some posts awhile back and some other people were having the same problems as you. They would find spots were they thought they removed all the product but the next day there would be little areas they missed.I use ex-p and I find i have the same problem too.I wouldn't call it a problem though , just something to keep in mind and tell your customers about.

I've run into this with polymer based products and understand your frustration. It seems like 3-4 days after I apply AIO or EX-P I see a few little spots I didn't get. Each time the problem arose after some intense rain. I really think the humidity level has something to do with it. I did a friends red car yesterday and we're due for some serious rain the next few days in Atlanta so I'll see if the problem is there on dark cars to.

I know excally what you are talking about. I detailed my dads car a few weeks ago and that thing looked brand new when i was done and it made the hours i put into it worth it when i was finished. it looked good. But the next day some wax showed up on the paint and then on the trim. I guess it is the mositure down here in the south. But i dunno. I was so proud of it till i saw the wax the next day.
