Dry ice to remove dents?

This is from another board...

I've used dry ice before and it worked too! You get a THICK glove and hold/rub the dry ice over the dent. It will contract the metal and viola! If the dent has a crease, I dont think the crease will come out....

will it work?

This is something I have heard of for years, but I don't personally know anyone that has done it. It may have some possibilities, but as with anything, the right technique probably has a lot to do with it.

You can also order something from Omahasteaks.com, it'll come in a cooler with dry ice in it. Pretty expensive way to get some though... but oh so tasty. ;)

Check in the yellow pages, some places around you (party supply stores, liquor stores maybe, various other places) probably sell dry ice.

I have tried that, by the way. Didn't work too well for me, but I wouldn't say that it really doesn't work because most of my dings are either creased in some way or look like something a BB would have done.

do you hold the ice on the FRONT of the dent or the REAR of the dent (meaning do you have to be able to access the back of the pannel you're working on? or just do this on top of the paint?)?? Also is there any possibility of hurting the paint by doing this??

Come on guys...haven't you seen the amazing Billy Mays' infomercial.....all you need is the SUPER DENT POPPER thingy.... "just like the pros use"....hot glue one end to your car then tie the other end to a tree and put the hammer down until the dent and the panel are pulled out/off!!!

:scared

I hate stupid infomercials!!!!! (just because someone is making 6 mil a yr on junk...)

The idea is to hold it on top of (as in, on the outside of the car) the dent. The extreme cold is supposed to contract the metal, forcing the dent back out / the metal into shape.

I don't buy it......if you were actually able to get the metal to contract that much, the paint would chip off. There are flex agents added to today's paints but no paint can withstand that much tolerance.....

I did it a few years back with our Galant... the dent was about 2 inches in diameter... Placed a dry towel on top of the dent, placed the dry ice on the edge(s) of the dent and massage it, it won't come back out perfectly if the dent has been there too long (metal memory thing) but if it's like a week old and uncreased/bent... It worked for me before... It doesn't work well on dings or curved areas like quarter panels and edges, though.

flex agents are usually only added to plastic bumper covers and the like.

i have also heard you were supposed to alternate dry ice and hot water in order to get the metal to contract/expand enough that it pops back into it's metal memory position. never tried it though.

I remember a thread brad B wrote a LONG time ago about the S4, titled something like parking garage attacks S4. Well he used ice to get a dent out of the roof.
