Driven Auto Detail: Prisoner Van (from hell!)

Hey peeps, thought I'd post one of my recent jobs. The vehicle belongs to the Brownsburg Police Department and it serves as the prisoner transport van. Being 11 years old and never garaged, it was very oxidized and beat up. The Chief of Police asked me if I could do anything for it and I told him I'd do what I could. To my surprise, it was actually a single stage paint. Needless to say, I went home wearing a lot of red paint on my shirt and pants. Plus, all my towels were red. Ok, on to the job...

Brought in from the rain:

With this van being in such bad condition, I needed a heavy hitter. It was washed via foam cannon containing a few ounces of Chem. Guys CW&G and scrubbed a soft wheel brush. After washing I allowed it to air dry as to not ruin my good drying towels:

After washing, it was time to mark off a test spot to see what I was up against:

I decided on a Meg's YELLOW polishing pad, Optimum Compound, and my new Makita rotary. I had never used the rotary before, so I thought this would be a good vehicle to test on:

After tackling the hood, I moved on to the side of the van. I had to leave smaller areas for hand polishing at the end:

By now, my YELLOW Meg's polishing pad had turned into what looked like a BURGUNDY Meg's cutting pad:

After about 7 hours of work, and a quick coat of DG AquaWax to give a little bit of protection and enhance the look, here is the end result:

I will say that the paint was far from perfect, however, knowing what the vehicle is used for, the goal of this job was just to make it look BETTER.

Comments, questions welcomed! Thanks for viewing!

That was a great vehicle for you to practice using the rotary on. You did an excellent job! I'm sure the client will be more than impressed. Great transformation. :)

Nicely done and like I've said before these are my favorite details because of the huge difference in the before and after. Not sure I'd want to do the inside though!

Lol, last time I worked on oxidized SS red I just used the burgundy pad instead :p Seriously though, that came out great, I'm sure the prisoners will feel a lot better being transported in something that's not all oxidized like that! :rofl

Ya know, I do what I can to help out the local convicts. I hope they feel like they are riding in luxury now. LOL :lol

Great work!! I love seeing this different vehicals being detailed. The results are clearly obvious between when it came in and the time and work you put in.

Thanks for sharing.

Cool job and nice spin around...

Did you finish down with anything after the rotary and compound, or was the department not really concerned with holograms and marring?

Thanks! I didn't finish down with anything after the rotary and compound just due to the fact that they weren't concerned with a perfect finish. They just wanted it to look better. Plus, some areas were developing rust so spending anymore time on it than I did would have kind of been a waste. I had to tape off the areas that were developing rust.

Great job!!! All joking aside, forget about what the prisoners think, this van represents the police department. Every time someone sees it driving down the road, prisoner laden or not, they see the police department. I know that I for one feel a lot better about a department that takes care of their equipment, especially when it comes time to hike the property taxes for more officers and equipment.

Again, GREAT JOB!!!

Looks great! Nice job!

Did you just go over the decals with the rotary or did you do around them and get them by hand later?

Really nice turn around on that one!! I agree that it's more than just giving the "guests" a nice ride to the slammer, it represents the PD itself. I do the cruisers in my town and also the fire chief and captain. They say they really appreciate the work I do on the cruisers. Being an Autopian, I can't just leave it as "good enough" so I do a lot of little details they really don't expect. I agree with you, that for the work these vehicles see, they don't have to be show cars, but they do look good when done. And, it's not your average, everyday detail job. Good work again!

Do you guys do these when they are off duty? I was just thinking that if they get a call (esp. the Fire Officers) they gotta go, no? Has that happened mid polish?

did you have to stay away from the edges of the stickers, didn't they all stay stuck? nice work, oh ya nice shop!!

:wow:
