Dressing a Spare Tire

I have a spare tire hitched at the BACK of my SUV -- you know, the kind that's visible. It has no tire cover.



I dressed the tire before, but I was just thinking... would you guys advice AGAINST dressing the WHOLE tire (i.e., including the treads)? I think it would look better if the whole tire was dressed.



I understand that dressing a tire would be dangerous (slippery and all that), but this is the SPARE tire anyway.



Besides, since it has no tire cover, a good tire dressing should be able to protect it from, say, the sun's UV rays and all that....

My personal thought about it is:

dress the tire, treads and all

it's a spare , so you're not supposed to use it.



In the event you need it , you have 3good tires on the floor, keep it calm the first miles and the dressing should be gone

On my car, i dress all of my spare (under the car) and at shows dress the whole tyre, ( including tread) just take it steady for a few miles if you need to use it and you should be fine.
 
If it is visible, then I would dress it.



Just when you have to use it take your time on it as the dressing will wear off pretty quickly. If it on one of your drive tires, then you can just smoke your tires when you take off :p

P.S. For you folks who can't detail coz it's winter, we have, hmm... about 32-35 C temperature here (90 - 95), and rising... too hot if you ask me.
 
Just for further back up, I'd say that not only could you, but you *should*. Use something that will protect it, not just dress it, like I'm guessing 303 would. My Amigo's the same way, and the MT's I have are a good bit bigger than the stock tires, so the cover doesn't fit. Unlike the other 4 tires, the spare is sitting there getting a lot more sun, and also always in the same spot. It's a good idea to protect it all the way around and also to literally rotate the tire every few months to spread the exposure around. It'll make the spare last longer. Otherwise, in a few months to a year, you'll get splits and cracks in the rubber--especially up in the tread. You can also include it in your rotation, but I preferred to keep a newish good looking tire back there. I'd say it's even more important to do that tire than the others.
