Does topping a sealant extend longevity?

Quick question for the gurus:

Does topping a sealant like Megs #20, NXT, Klasse SG, or Zaino with a carnuba topper aid to extend longevity of the sealant?

Reason I ask.....last detailing on my GTP was in May. Car was clayed, prepped with AIO, sealed with NXT (x1), and topped with #26 Paste (x2). The car still beads very well today and still feels slick to the touch.

I've ready many posts where NXT didn't last very long....so either the prep with AIO was very good or the #26 topper gave the NXT some additional longevity.

What do you all think?

I am sure that it did to some extent.

It was just one more thing that the elements had to go through, I don't know how much protection it added though:nixweiss

Have you done any QD'ing since your application in May? What QD? What car shampoo have you been using? 1Z Perl, Z6 and QEW all contain some protective additives. How often? How is vehicle stored?

What does the surface feel like? Still slick and smooth?

Not sure if the products you mention really have a additive effect when applied. What was the spacing between products?

That's a very good question. One that's been on my mind also. I'm no expert :o but I think a carnuba topper would extend the life of a sealant. Enemies of LSPs would be abrasions, heat, UV and chemical reactions. The wax would act as a sacrificial layer to the sealant. Abrasions and chemical reactions (dirt, road debris, washing, bird poop, road oils, etc.) would first have to work through the wax before affecting the sealant. I understand the waxes evaporate with the heat of the sun. I don't think sealants experience the same problem. From what I've read, a wax layer lasts max 90 days. UV protection, I don't know how much protection waxes offer but I don't know how they affect sealant either. As blkZ28Conv mentioned, how the finish was cared for and protected would effect it's life. My guess that May's detail lifespan has gone like this:

Meg's #26 lasted through July, maybe August. Let's say 60 days

NXT lasted until September. Let's say 30 days

AIO still hanging in there. Another 30+ days

So, most of the protection is gone. All of this analysis assumes that each layer is worn through sequentially. If the Meg's #26 offered little UV protection and NXT is highly affected by UV, the end of life or failure of the NXT would occur sooner.

Just my thoughts and ramblings. However this has played out, it's time for another treatment. :xyxthumbs :D

I have finally dedided to try a topper but I cannot but help to wonder how this will affect my next detail. It seems to me that the wax over the SG may complicate things-perhaps I will do the roof only, just to see..

BlackZ28,

For last few months I've been consumed with work....so I've neglected the car. I've barely QD'd and when I do I use #34 final inspection. As for washing, Megs gold class and tap water.......or when desperate....touchless car wash....please don't get mad at me....its out of desparation!

RJJ,

Using a carnuba topper certainly changes the next detail. You would certainly need to use AIO before applying SG

LOL :D !

George,

Disappointed but not mad. ;)

Let's be for real. There are more important things than daily/weekly car care. I am sure you would not have neglected your vehicle to the point of paint abuse.
