Does this sound right before I start?

Alright, I finally got all of my supplies in and would like to detail my car before the end of the summer. Here is what I have:

-Porter Cable 7424 Bonus Kit w/6" backplate and one supplied pad

-CMA pad kit w/ extra MF bonnets

-3M Imperial Hand Glaze

-3M Perfect-It III Rubbing Compound

-3M Swirl Mark Remover

-3M Finesse-It II

-Zaino kit, w/ Z2 and ZFX, no Z5

Here's what I plan on doing:

1)Dawn wash the car, then use Claybar to remove paint contaminents.

2)Pull car into garage, attach wool pad to PC and apply PI-III to that. I'll work this into the clearcoat until i see good results.

3)I'll then move onto the yellow pad and apply FI-II. I'll use the same technique until I see significant results.

4)Next, comes the SMR, w/ a white pad.

5)To finish it off, I'll apply IHG w/ a gray pad and buff it out with a MF bonnet.

I also plan to use Zainos glass polish with a white pad for the windows. And I also plan on doing more within these steps. Obviously I'll go into more detail when doing this than what I explained, but I just didn't feel like typing every detail.

Now, the last step, the Zainos:

I'm not 100% sure with this step, as I've never done it before. So correct me if I'm wrong:

1)After washing car from the polishing, and thoroughly drying. I'll mix the Z2 with ZFX. I'll put this on, let it haze, remove with MF. Is that all I need to do, any tips?

It would help if you could describe the condition of your paint. Those are all great products but I dont know if they are all needed for your situation.

good luck and welcome

My paint condition looks good from a distance, but when you get up to it closely, you see millions of swirls, light scratches, med. scratches, and when my car sits next to a black car with the same paint code, it looks lighter and grayer (oxidation?). That's why I'm using the rubbing compound, the paint also has light etching from bird droppings.

Finesse it should do it. Its better to do several application with a milder polish than one that you would be sorry for. This also helps you to learn more about the product and the PC at the same time. Your next decision is which pad to use. Start with the polishing pad and then move up to the cutting pad if needed before trying a stronger cut.

BTW: try to find a test area to pratice on maybe an old beater or a hidden area.

good luck

Yeah, I'll practice on a beater first. So you guys don't think I should use the PI-III? I remember doing a search yesterday and finding a thread about how someone used the same exact rubbing compound (PI-III) and getting extremely good results, and not even wasting time with the lighter stuff. His paint seemed about as good as mine. That's why I wanted to use the PI-III.

I have found 3M SMR :up to be EXCELLENT material. You may find that you don't even need to go with a harsher product.

I would stick to either PI III or FI II with the nod in my opinion going to PI III and not both as they both have the same purpose. The finesse it is not bad a product don't get me wrong but you really have to work it even with a cutting pad.

:nono Don't apply the Hand Glaze if you intend on going with the Z2/Z5 ZFX route. The oils in the Hand Glaze will prevent Zaino cross bonding with the clearcoat! Don't attempt hide the imperfections - continue working them to they are removed.

I wouldn't dawn wash before the Claying. Just use standard car soap.

:xyxthumbs I would dawn wash just before the Zaino application to get rid of product residue and oils left behind from the polishes.

:xyxthumbs Porter Cable Dual Action Buffer

Good luck!

Thanks again, but I was always told that IHG and other 3M products are 100% compatible with Zainos. I don't have Z5, so that's why I ordered IHG, after hearing it does equally or better of a job. I was thinking of using the IHG as a replacement for the Z5, but you don't think I should?
