I've taped up in the past to make things a little easier. Even if there is a polish that does not stain trim at all, it always gets stuck in crevices and the like, so it saves me a headache later. You should see my felt sunroof seal after the time I didn't tape up!
Remove the tape promptly and wipe off any polish that accumulates on the edges. Left the tape on for three days once and the resulting line as pretty hard to get off. Guess that was bad form on my part.
