Do liquid sealants soften/remove single stage paint?

Hi guys, I just finished up a BMW e30 that had single stage paint. After 205 and an IPA wipedown, the MF towels showed no more red paint transfer and I moved onto the LSP. I was using FK 2180 and both by hand and machine I noticed the pads were coming away very red, almost as red as the pads were with 205 correction. Can a solvent based sealant soften or even remove single stage paint? Did I use an incorrect product for this paint type or does this just come with the territory?

Hmm, interesting...I've never used that product, or anything like it on single stage. But it sorta sounds like your experience answered your question, huh?

Wonder what Ron Ketcham could contribute to this.

FK2180 is an all in one, so yes, you will see paint transfer.

"Finish Kare 2180 Ultra Polymer Sealant contains cleaning agents to remove mild surface imperfections and oxidation. Cloudy paint will clear up. Dull paint will look deeper. In one step, your vehicle will have a great shine, better color, and awesome protection."

Ah, yeah....that "remove mild surface imperfections" is a clue, huh? We sometimes overlook the abrasiveness of AIOs when they're too gentle to do "real correction".

And for that matter, there are some AIOs that are too gentle to do "real correction" on clear coat finishes, but are plenty abrasive enough to tackle single stage (typically much softer) finishes.

I guess I forget that as the Jag's SS isn't all *THAT* soft...well, not like BMW's Jet Black or anything. But yeah, back in the day even "nonabrasive" Meg's #7 would do some work on black SS lacquer if you used it with the right media.

And I'll *NEVER* forget how Zaino's AIO can mar up the kind of exterior plastic that I've used other AIOs on for ages!

For that matter, people say KAIO, another "functionally nonabrasive" product, messes up the finish that PO85rd leaves.

Just the very mild solvent system used. It "cleans" the oxidized single stage paint of "dead/oxidized" paint film.

Not during it with abrasives, no worry, doing what it should do.

Plain old IPA can do a bit of this sort of cleaning under most circumstances.

Grumpy
