Do I need to 'remove' old LSP's before I put down new stuff.....

I have poli seal topped with many many coatings of OS, and I think some #26 thrown in there. I want to polish this out a bit with OP, and then put down RMG then collinite 476s for the winter. Do I have to do anything special, or can I just do OP, wipe off with MF, then do RMG, then do 476s?

I really dont want to get into this 'alcohol wipedown' business, but do I need to?

I wouldn't polish a thing if the paint doesn't need any swirls or scratches removed. I have a Toyota Rav4 that just gets a wash before I try the next LSP. I don't think there's enough of whatever's left between products to matter. Note: I usually go about 3-6 weeks before having that "gotta try something moment" and no durability is NOT a concern, I'd go completely batsh!t if I had to leave the paint alone for 6 months!

the answer to your question is that OP will remove your old LSP

no need to do anything special if you are going to polish

You don't 'have to' do anything other than wash the car (duh:)), but it never hurts to run over the paint with a light polish before changing products...my feeling is that most products work best on a "clean" surface (one free of another product's residue).

I think I would just apply the new products right over the old LSP and see how it looks. Remember, once you introduce polish to this equation you'll need to take precautions that no polish residue is left behind that might interfere or eat away your new LSP's since polish cuts through LSP's quite easily. Wiping off a polish with a dry microfiber is bound to leave some residue behind. Try it without polishing first and see what kind of results you get.

The only way a polish can 'eat through' an LSP is when it's being applied overtop of it. As for bonding issues...some say that an application of polish can help the bonding of an LSP, others say the residues interfere with bonding. The truth? Like with how many licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie-Pop, the world may never know.

As with everything else YMMV - Your Mileage May Vary

Guys, I am not polishing because I think i need to in order to put down the LSP. I am polishing because there are some light scratches and swirls and what not from the 3 or 4 months of summer/washing/etc.

Thank you all though, for answering my question and many other questions.

Hey, I'm 48 and happy to still be here! I'm looking at a happy retirement where I can devote all my time to detailing. And yeah, that ad was a classic! - still makes me laugh.
