I have had problems getting odors out of vehicles completely, and have considered using an Ozone Generator to do the job. I have found no ozone machine reasonably priced for what they are. I solved this by going to a sign shop and getting a used Neon light transformer. (12kv) This power supply is a self conained unit. What I did was to mount the thing to a board, and using odd materials, built a good powerful unit.

I found a large mouth jar, and put one lead on the inside (aluminum foil lined) and one outside (also lined with foil). I made sure the wires or the foil never touched. I hooked the other wire to the foil outside. I found a clear plastic container I used as a guard/ insulator around the jar. when I plugged the apparatus in, there was a buzzing and a faint blue glow. Also there was some mini arcing (normalinside the jar. I could smell the Ozone immediately. There is some heat generated, but not enough to worry about IMHO.

Within 20 minures the interior of the vehicle was done well enough for me, but in the future I will put the process on a timer.

Besides warning about proper insulation, the only other warning is for you NOT to breath the Ozone more than you absolutley have to. Before you enter the vehcle, open all doors and let the residual Ozone dissipate. Ozone is not good to breath, and can be injurious to you if breathed too long or in too heavy concentrations. Oh, my point in building this unit , is that it cost me less than $45.00, as opposed to well over $200.00 for most manufactured units. :D
 
I remember seeing the website a couple of years back, i might have it written down at work. I did look for the transformer but couldn't find one around here. Let me know if anyone has a line some.
 
Bad for everything it comes in contact with, just to what degree. From what I understand (read limited) it is a highly unstable molecule that reacts with others to destroy odors. Now saying this, I used it over 10 times in my 03' RSX-S with no ill effects noticed on any molding, vinyl, or leather surfaces.
 
hmm thanks guys, ive got this strong smoke smell in my car and im thinking of getting the interior ozone cleaned just this once.. just wanted to make sure that i wasn't inviting more trouble...

Did you take your car to a shop to have it cleaned? and why exactly did you get these ozone cleanings done?
 
Ozone is one of the things that causes rubber to break down and crack. something goes for plastics. UV rays are another for both rubber and plastic. Ozone is a great astringent. It actually causes cells to explode much like alcohol that is how it kills mildew and other bacteria that causes oder. I had a coworker that made ozone machines in his basement for a while. They are extremely effective in getting rid of nasty odors. before mine broke I would use it to get rid of that nasty musty smell in antique car interiors. All in all they work great but use them sparingly they can be dangerous if used too much.

Yes, why do you think tire rubber is full of anti-ozonant chemicals?



Not a bad idea to run the car's fan system on high to evenly distribute the ozone throughout the car. And no need to run the ozone machine for that long either, or if the inside of the car is damp.



Now what would be interesting is to mount this home made ozone machines electrostat into the bucket of a shopvac so as to have an ozone blower machine.
 
Ozone is NOT good for humans. Avoid it whenever possible. If you must use it, do everything within your power to inhale as little as possible and to evacuate the remnants from the vehicle as thoroughly as possible.



I deal with it in my profession and we go to great lengths to avoid coming into "contact" with it.

Also I have recently located new (to me) product to remove odors. We have used it around the house and car lately and the stuff is amazing. It pretty much works as advertised. It is one of those TV ad products that we ran into through a relative. But holy crap does it work. And. Yes. When it kills a smell it stays gone. Blows anything else I have tried away. Supposed to be perfectly safe.

Again this stuff is far better than Febreeze, baking soda, local janitorial industrial deodorant, and anything that my wife and I have yet tried. Instant too.



It doesn't take much, but I still find it a bit pricey. I just buy the gallon and get sprayers for it.



Hey if anyone else uses this please post, so I don't sound like a loon. I know the website is awful!! But as far my experiences go it is a best in class product.
 
Ozone is O3 - oxygen in the atomosphere is mostly O2. The extra oxygen atom is very weakly bound to the molecule and desperately wants to get loose and react with something else. When oxygen binds with another molecule or atom it is an oxidation reaction. Burning is another such reaction. Oxygen binding with rubber and plastics breaks it down, and it binds to the molecules in your cells, damaging them. This is why it can be a good disinfectant - as in hydrogen peroxide - it also has an oxygen molecule that wants to get loose.



It is a good cleaner, but also can cause damage. Be sparing.
