Ding Repair Help

I'm new here and have been reading a lot, but couldnt find the info i wanted. I'm a amature at detailing, and really wanna start getting into it. My car has 2-3 little knicks that have gotten into the paint. One part i think has gone all the way down to the metal, but isnt more than 7-8mm long. I have a big spot on my front bumper that has been half-assed touched up with touch up paint. Also on my door, theres 5-10 little dot sized white spots, where rocks or something has made a small chip, would buffing take these out? I want to try to get these looking better if not brand new. I'll be getting a pc soon, and will the work with the right pads/compound? I've been reading about poorboys, and stuff other than crap you get at wal-mart.

Hey Matt,
Check out my post "Rock chip / Scratch repair" I actually repaired my chips this morning. I didn't get to the two rock chips yet, will do that tomorrow. I did fill in and buf out a 1/4 X 4" scratch today and came out awesome. I posted my steps and the some links to the pictures.
