Dilemmas

I'm not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I have a dilemma.

A little background info: This past Friday I went over to a friend's house to watch him wash his car, and to help out if I could. ;) But it was some experience.

First of all, I couldn't believe how much he spent on his Zymol stuff. :scared For the amount he paid, I could've gotten one of the good car care kits on the internet, plus a bunch of MF towels from Ranney. :D Okay fine, he likes Zymol, it's his choice and money.

So he starts preparing to wash his car, and takes out this sponge that came with the Zymol kit, plus a couple of wash mits.

Curious, I asked him "Are you going to use that sponge to wash your car?"

"Yup"

:scared At least he had two buckets and knew about the 2 bucket method.

He proceeds to wet the car down, using the strong spray nozzle. I suggested he try the shower one instead. He then starts to wash his car, starting with the roof. "Okay, so far so good." I thought. Then I notice that he first rubs an area with the sponge, and then rubs the same area with his hand. Okay.....I decided to hold my tongue.

So after he finished washing the car and is rinsing it down, I notice he has a chamois.

"Er....you gotta try these microfibre towels to dry the car." I proceed to get a couple from my car and give one to him. I then helped him dry the car, trying to teach him a good way, but he still ended up using the chamois...... *sigh*

He next wants to try out the Zymol pre-wax, which smells like coffee. "Er....did you ever clay your car?"

"No"

"Let's try that one I bought for you."

And to prove my point, I did a small section of the hood, and let him feel the difference.

Needless to say, I had to leave because 1) I was getting the urge to do everything for him, and 2) I wanted to do my car too.

:p

I guess my problem is, how do I convert him to the Autopian way? Should I just keep suggesting this site to him? Or just do his car for him? Or kidnap him and force him to read this site over and over? :D

He's a really nice guy, and just got a new Mazda6 in Titanium Grey (I think that was the color). He's a policeman, so he does have some time.....although he only has a dial-up connection. That shouldn't be a problem, right?

Any suggestions how I can convert my friend? ;)

Thanks in advance,

Reid

i would probably let the car get a bit on the dirty side. and let him watch you wash the car. like you did with him. but show him how you do it then let him see the results. that should convince him.

I convinced a friend by showing him all the swirls in his car, and pointing out how much clearer my paint looked. Teasing him also helped.

Print out David Bynon's, How to get the perfect shine article.:up :up :up :up :up

Ask him what he wants, there's Good, Better and BEST, pick one.

If he chooses BEST, hand him the Perfect Shine article and let him graduate to Detective.

If your car has the "Perfect Shine" and he has an eye for details, he'll want to learn the ways of the JediTopian!

The Consequences of your actions could have him wishing there were 48 hours in a day!:scared

Yeah it's unbelievable what some people do with their cars. Chamois are definately outdated now. I was very late in switching to towel and MF's. I'm keeping my PVA perforated chamois for seat cleaning and removing dirt from dashboard and interior trim duty. Not all car's need claying or washing with fallout remover but alot do however. I've never used clay and never will as it's easier to wash the car with the fallout remover

Don't have to re wash the vehicle.

Thanks for all the advice! I was thinking I should just try demonstrate the proper car care techniques to him, maybe do half the car and let him do the other half and compare the results. I'll also print out David's Perfect Shine article and let him read it and ponder on the points David gives.

Thanks again!

Reid
