Did some headlight repair marketing....

I had some cards made up. Just my normal business cards but on the back it says...

"I can FIX your headlights!"

My son and I went to Walmart at noon two Saturdays ago (busy time) and found vehicles that had pretty bad headlight damage.

We put out 20 cards on their driver's side window. Got 10 calls and 8 jobs at 30.00 per. We set it up for when they come back to Walmart which all 8 were back last Saturday at the same time. We used two 3inch headlight kits and M105 followed my HD Speed. Two Dewalt cordless drills and did all 8 in 1.5 hours working together.

After we were done, we searched the lot again and have 4 more for tomorrow.

This was just ONE parking lot. It's there if you want it!

Sounds interesting! Did you have any issues with Walmart staff? I'm assuming you asked them for permission to do this before starting. For $30 was it just a sanding/polishing job (no coating), and if so, what did you tell people in terms of the durability of the finished product?

No. I didn't ask and had no probs. If they say anything, I will do what they say.

This issue of this is the marketing.

I did several that were bad but none needed to be sanded. I let the customer know that the damage may be more severe but the results will be very noticeable.

Never tell them you can make them perfect. If you do, you're setting yourself up for a bad situation.

Interesting, I tried to do this at a few local malls, and was definitely not welcome in doing so. Good idea here!

Really? At Walmart?

They are so busy. I simply went to the bottom of the parking lot so I was in no one's way. You know, how they do it when they are giving puppies/kittens away.

lol

Very interesting, you might even pickup follow up business from those people later on if they want more done to their cars.

I have a few questions, since I think I will do like you did and give that a try:

1. Where did you plug you electic Equipment?

2. How did you get people to find you in the parking lot?

3. Did you offer to seal the headlight afterwards to put UV protectant on it? You know that if you don't do that they will get in the same shape they were in no time.

Here in az I made some business cards that had a picture of a oxidized headlight befor and after the restoration. The card also said " Ive noticed your headlights have seen better days contact ***** for a complete headlight restoration.

I handed abouy 50 out at walmart and the only call I got back was the manager telling me to not do that again and to read the no loitering signs.

Atleast it worked for you!

Also instead of spending a fortune on a generator. You can head to walmart and pick up this gadget that plugs into your car battery (while car is running so you don't drain the battery) and it has 2 outlets that you can plug in your buffer to. It works great for small projects lime that although I wouldn't use it to buff a whole vehicle etc.

So no new UV coating? IMO it's not worth offering a "fix" that will just return to its current damaged state in no time. All that will create is a dissatisfaction with the service you are providing, and is a sure fire way to negate any future repeat business. Sorry if that comes off as harsh, but it is reality.

I guess for $30, cleaning them up isn't a bad price. I just prefer to not only make money, but to create a relationship that will lead to additional business in the future.

I never said that I didn't upsell from these headlight restores.

Hell yes I do. If you think I just took 30.00 and didn't try to make a customer for life, you're way wrong.

Just thought about this thread earlier today.

Some business cards with "i saw your headlights" marketing on them would be nice.

Is there a way that we could add this and multiple other things to our cards.

What I thought of was multiple check boxes for different reasons you might leave a card.

One like

I can fix your cloudy headlights

I can polish your paint

Gorgeous car, would love to work on it

I don't know which are best. It was just a random thought

Well what did you use for a coating? lol that's the question we've been asking.

M21 after finishing with D151.

Average time before clouding again is 6 months.

By the way, use whatever the heck you want to coat with. That's not what this thread is about.

It's about marketing and helping to add to your bottom line.

Coatings have never made me money. My work has.
