Did I make a mistake???

Okay I got done with my first Souveran detail and am a bit confused, and a bit disappointed, let me tell you why...

The car while looking wet, doesn't seem to have very much depth. Also, in the sun, you can clearly see more swirls. This is frustrating cuz it seems as if through all my work im never going to be able to get my car to look good in the sunlight. They are not very big, but still visible from 8 feet (Yeah i measured :wall :hairpull ). The car seems to me to be a bit hazy and what causes this I have no clue.

So what can I do to fix these things? Here is my process this car, my 2005 MINI Cooper S:

Pinnacle Bodywork Shampoo

SSR 2.5

SSR 1

Pinnacle Paintwork Cleansing Lotion

3 Coats of Souveran

Treated Bumpers with Sonus Eclipse

Treated Tires with Mothers Reflections Tire Care

QD with Crystal Mist

ditto, trust me, I did the same thing finishing up with EXP and found out that my hood and my trunk have been painted at some point in it's like since there are scratches i just can't get rid of !!

I have an '02 Laguna seca blue M3

Yip, working pictures would be helpful. But I'm thinking, since SSR1 doesn't have any cut (so minimal you'd never notice), that the haze from SSR 2.5 is still remaining. Try some SSR 2 and then SSR1 and then top with your souverean. Should do it I think.

I didn't get SSR 2, but... I do have Sonus SFX2 and 1 would they work? I was thinking of this:

Polishing with SFX2 then 1, then Paintwork Cleansing twice, 2 Coats of Z5, 2 Coats Z2, 2 Coats Souveran.

I stopped using Poorboy's SSR series 2 years ago as i found it ineffective in removal of swirls.

I like a heavier compound, then go to lighter compound, then go with a pre sealant and a sealant for depth.

but give us more info, what pads were used ? what machine was used ? pc ? rotary ?

what speeds ?

hopefully we can help you out as I've done many red cars in my day and they surely never lack depth and are swirl free.

I have a PC 7424 Orbital, with a 6" counterbalance, and a 6" backing plate. I used SSR 2.5 with an Orange Lake Country 6.5" Pad, in spots I used SSR3 (for scratches and marring). I then used SSR 1 with a White 6.5" Lake Country Pad. I used only the weight of the machine as pressure and when applying I used two dots about the size of a dime and about as thick as a new eraser on a pencil. Turned the dial two 3 to start out, until it got spread, then turn the dial to a notch or two over 5 until hazing occured.

Thanks Again

Mikey

Random Rant: I hate high school girls.:angry :angry :angry :angry I'm supposed to be at prom right now, but someone decided that Mikey wasn't what she wanted 1 week before. I already had a tux too. OH WELL :bat :bat :work: LOL LOL

Mikey,

The process itself sounds good. But try more pressure and vary the amount on the pad. IMO try to use less, because more product than necessary can reduce the effectivity and increase dusting.

Try to find the optimum working time, and don't stop too soon. You can also go milder by using SSR2.5 with a white polishing pad.

Oh, BTW schoolgirls love high OPMs... :o

That sucks man. Prom is comin up for me soon! :bounce

But ya, if you were using SSR 3 and 2.5 with cutting pads, SSR1 will definatly not give a sealable surface on the mini paint.

Also, when using the PC, you need to apply pressure to do any sort of cutting.

Have a late night with your ex prom dates friend. :p :ignore

That must be what i am doing wrong, no pressure. My car does take more then one pass though to remove swirls... I am only using ssr 2 also.... What do you suggest steve? Step up to 2.5 on a white pad or an orange pad? Or should i use ssr2 on a orange pad? Plus will ssr1 get rid of hazing and make the finish ready for my lsp? I see you mentioned ssr1 won't leave a sealable surface.....

Also very nice mini man..... Nice color :xyxthumbs

Oh you just wait 'till I slam it on coilovers, spacer the wheels, and replace that "cute" chrome grill for something more aggressive later this month. :bigups

Mikey

Use enough pressure to bog the PC then back off just enough to for it to pick up speed again. Make sure the speed is on 6 and you are moving it about 1/2-1" per second with 50% overlapping passes for best swirl removal results.

So how should I use SSR1? Should I put in on a cutting pad instead of a white one? Or should I just take the route of SFX2 then 1?

Go with SSR 2 before hand and then go over the surface with SSR 1 to get anything else out, that may come out.

How about ZPC Fusion?? I don't have SSR 2 on hand and am in the middle of detailing my car, so... yeah. I just want to buff some swirls and get my paint as clear as can be before waxing.

Mikey

You won't really see the pad spinning- the PC doesn't actually spin the pad, it lets it freewheel. The whole axle moves in the orbit pattern (almost like you're doing it by hand except really fast)
