I have a guy that works with me that has one of these brand new in a bag with polishes and pads and it came in a bag. he's had it for like a year used it once to see how it works but hasn't messed with it since he paid like $230 for it and said he would give it to me for a $100. is this a good tool I should purchase as a rotary or should I look into a makita. if I do get it are the backing pads universal.

Excellent machine at an excellent price, I’d jump on it.

I’m not sure about the factory plate but I think it’s one of those “old school rubber disks that’s made for nasty wool bonnets. Doesn’t matter though, the DW849 has a standard 5/8-11 threaded spindle so you can use anybody’s rotary plates. I've used the DW849 with Meg's plates and pads.

PC.

Thanks for your comments guys. I will be finding out soon I passed by his house yesterday on the way home from work and picked it up. I just took the buffer and bag because he had paid extra for the 3M pads andthe polishes was some off brand and he said he was going to use them for his other buffer.
