Detailing stainless steel headers

I have a set of stainless steel DC Sports headers on my Integra, it seems that because they are usually very hot whilst driving, some water or something has splashed up on them and etched into the stainless steel.

I have tryed using a metal polish and this didn't remove the etching.

Any ideas??

Is it etched or is the color changed? The discoloration could be a chemical change in the metal from the heat and rapid cooling from the water. There may be nothing you can do.

Try a stainless steel polish, not just a normal automotive metal polish. That is what I use to clean the inside of my exhaust tips and it works very well.

Go to your local Harley (or other motorcycle) dealership. They should be able to take a look at it and hook you up with something that'll work. Its hard for me to say exactly without seeing it.

I find that polishing by hand does not work well. Try to use a drill and polishing pad with mothers or get a dremel with a polishing pad if the area is tight. I have removed burned oil from an exhaust tip by using this method.

Paul-- I used Mothers metal polish. I also tried Autosol aswell, none of these removed any of the etching.

Mothers have three metal polishes, and the only one that may help is the chrome polish.

The other two Mothers and Autosol are really best for softer metals like aluminium/brass.

I used NXT Metal Polysh on my chromed headers (my avatar) and it worked very well...it was quite abrasive (I could feel and hear it abrading) but broke down well to a high gloss and left protection.

BTW, I haven't seen it in Australia...I got mine online.

This is also a strong possibility. :(

Thanks Paul, looks like the NXT will be added to my next order from OS.

Its very possible that its there for good, but I will certainly try and remove it.
