Detailing Bloopers and Blunders

I have a black is300 and it is outside all the time.. I dont have a garage, what i did was i got a custom fit cover. Its the newest material, forget the name but pretty much water proof dries very quickly and is thin. Is it bad to use a cover? Some people say they scratch yet the manufactuerer ensured me it will not. Would like some input if you all could help.

It is easy to put swirls into your car since you need to tug the material over the cars surface to ensure a firm fit.

I have been using a custom fit cover for 4 years, on two cars and I would never stop using one as long as my car is outside. Everything last longer, even one layer of wax will last at least twice as long. Covers protect your car from the rain, bird crap, uv rays, dust and all kinds of other junk which we all know can really do a number on any finish.

I really like them and I highly recommend them. If you use your car every day then it is going to be a pain to remove it and put it back on every day but I dealt with it and I was fine. Just remember .......... keep your car clean.

I spent 190.00 on my cover. Thats how much I like them.

Also make sure the cover fits nice and snug. If the cover flaps in the wind that can lead to scratching and swirls.:down

I use a car cover indoors to keep dust from getting on it from opening/closing the garage door. Do you think this is an extreme? I only put the cover on after washing or QD.

It is a Corvette America flannel lined cover, but looks like it might have some non-cotton stiching on the section lines, any ideas if they might scratch the surface??

:bounce

Z06 - it should be fine, as long as pressure isn't applied even not cotton seams will not hurt your paint.

I have a Car Cover that is made for outdoors, it has all kinds of stuff that an indoor cover does not need. Most of the time people use outdoor covers on the indoor cars which is just a waste of material and money. 99% of the out door covers are heavy and thick, if yours is thin and doesn't look like it will hold up against bird crap, rain and snow it's probaly a good indoors cover.

Your car doesn't need to be clean to the point where you JUST washed it, you can cover a slightly dusty car but just be careful when you put it on.

I don't think that it is extreme at all. It really serves my purposes well for my black weekend ride. I drive it on the weekends then wash it and cover it in the garage. This keeps it dust free and ready to go when it is time for its next drive.

The only downside is that I don't get to sneak a peek during the week.

I like that though, holds the suspense. I've had my car for a little bit and not seeing it through the week has allowed me to feel a little heeby jeeby when I take the cover off and fire her up.

If you have any bloopers or blunders about when you did a "DOH" moment while working on a car; post it here.

Here's one. I work at a Ford Dealership, now in Bookkeeping, however when I first started the last cleanup guy left so I got to wash vehicles. I was up on a step-stool washing the top of a van and as I stepped down to the bucket, well... "DOH", I stepped into the bucket. Walked around the rest of the day with a soggy foot.

------

A neighbor at home wanted me to try some polish out, so as I was getting ready to put it on the car I had a hard time getting any to squirt out of the bottle. I took the cap off (bottle wasn't completely full) and wasn't paying attention to what I should be doing, "DOH" and waxed my garage floor instead. I spilled most if not all of it on the floor.

Hahaha. I have a good one! :)

So I used to work in a large high volume shop back in the day. It was probably around '95 and I was working on a Chevy Astro van (mid 80's model). When we cleaned the wheels (with acid cleaners) we would always rotate them 180 degrees, and then clean one more time to make sure they were totally clean. Well, it tends to get pretty loud in the shop, and between the air compressor, rotary buffers running at 3000rpms, vacuums, and radios, one really couldn't even hear the vehicle running. For those of you who've never driven an Astro van of that era. This was before the had the safety mechanism that prevented you from shifting out of park until you depressed the brake peddle. The brake pedal and gas pedal were also very close to each other on this vehicle, very poor design actually....

So as I'm sure you've already figured out, I hopped inside, put the gas peddle to the floor thinking it was the brake, shifted into reverse, and left a 15' tire patch until I slammed into the back wall!!! :driving:

Luckily there was nobody behind the vehicle, and to top it off there was even a 55 gallon plastic drum filled with empty pop cans against the wall that cushioned the blow. Only damage to the vehicle was a light scuff to the bumper, and of course major embarrassment on my part.

LOL, they said the look on my face was priceless! :D

Nice post Chad.... That certainly has set the bar :D

Oh yeah Ive stepped in a bucket a water more than once !!:D

Rasky that is too funny!! Im sure you had some good laughs after that and never heard the end of it! Did you get a good nickname after that!? I bet everyone kept their distance around you when you got in a vehicle to drive it!;)

Well ,my most embarrassing moment was when I was working at my dentists in a busy parking lot and went to sit down and my shorts split completely in the back all the way down. :scared:Luckily no one was watching me or saw and I quickly wrapped my shirt around my waist . I had to work all day like that because I had no time to run to the store and buy some new shorts !

I always carry an extra pair of shorts with me now!!

I wish I could say that I had something to add, but you know me....I am perfect:huh:...jk
I just don't have any funny blunders to add to the mix, but that doesn't mean that I never will.

Ok, here goes. This is more of a blooper, and fortunately it happened while I was alone. When I first got my Flex, I wasn't quite used to its quirky handling and the tendency it has to sometimes wander on its own. I was working on a vertical panel, squatting down and resting on the balls of my feet. In other words, I really wasn't securely planted.

Well, of course I lost concentration at the wrong time and the Flex moved a bit far from my "comfort zone." And kept moving. I tried to bring it back but I was off balance too much and the stupid thing pulled me over in slow motion. I fell sideways onto the garage floor. I didn't hurt the car or myself, but I sorta just shook my head and had to laugh a little! More damage to my ego than anything else.X_XX_X

I think I got one. I had just finished washing my car as it was getting dark. I applied some tire dressing to all four tires and came back out 15 minutes later and wondered howcome the tires didn't look like they were dressed. So I went ahead and grabbed my bottle of tire dressing which was on the ground and tried to apply more but nothing happened. Next thing you know, I see on the bottle, "prep-sol" while my tire dressing bottle was hiding behind the rear tire of the car

That's one good thing about most Meguiar's products...they all have distinct scents that help you know what product you grabbed. ;)

Keep them coming! :)
