Detailed In-Laws Metallic Green Ranger

Rob Tomlin

Lotus Exige S
I really owed my father in law a favor, as he helped me build a dedicated Home Theater, saving me thousands of dollars vs. hiring a private contractor. So, I told him to drop of his Ranger and I would detail it for him.

The paint wasn't in horrible condition, I knew it had potential. A nice dark green metallic. But it definitely had some fairly significant swirls in it that needed to be removed. There were also a fair number of scratches and stains in the paint.

Basic steps were:

Wash
Clay entire vehicle
Wash
Poorboys SSR2.5 with Yellow Cutting pad
Klasse AIO with Polishing Pad
4 Star UPP

The first two pics show the difference before and after in the hood. The first picture shows a lack of depth, and the metallic is barely noticeable in the hood:

This picture shows more depth, and removal of the swirls lets you see the metallic better:

Here is a pic that really shows how bad the swirls were:

Here is the hood from a similar angle after completion. Unfortunately the sun wasn't in the same place, but I tried to get a similar angle. Swirls? We don't need no Stinkin' Swirls!

Before and After Tire and Rim shots (I used 4 Star's Wheel Cleaner Gel that I got free with my last order):

And a couple of final "After" shots:

This was my first time using UPP, and I must say that I am sold. I am a long time (7 years) Zaino user. The UPP was so much easier to apply and remove than Zaino. And the slickness was amazing! My in laws couldn't get over how good it looked and how smooth it was.

I spent a good 9 or 10 hours on this, but it turned out great. I also did the interior but I won't bother with pics here. I used the method described by JRStilez using Oxyclean, and it worked extremely well.

My back is killing me, but the results were worth it.

:)

:bow

Looks great man! I too used UPP for the first time today on a dark green metallic truck. A Tacoma though instead of a Ranger. I'll probably post a couple of pics tomorrow. I have the befores but no afters yet.

Hit the hot tub man, you've earned it. 14 hours! Wow!

Wow!!!:bow :bow That is quite a transformation!!!

Did you use the yellow cutting pad on a PC, Rotary or Cyclo - just curious?

Great Job! Now go relax and enjoy your home theatre!!!

I used the yellow cutting pad with a PC. I was surprised that the SSR2.5 with a cutting pad didn't leave more marring or hazing. I had planned on following up with SSR1, but since it looked so good after the SSR2.5, I decided to try AIO instead, and it worked out great.

And we just finished watching a movie in the Theater that was appropriate for Halloween eve: The Ring. :bigscream

Scott: you won't be disappointed with UPP! I'm sold in a big way. So is my father in law. He wants me to order him some next time I place an order! :bigups

it looks great, now, if i can get MY daughter to marry a guy that likes to detail like i do :lmfao :lmfao

Amazing work and picture documenting.

What did you use to dress the tires? They look great!

Hey, coming from you that is a real compliment. Thanks!

By the way, I mistated your username in my post. Brain fart! :fart How do you edit your own posts? Your method of cleaning upholstery and carpet with Oxyclean worked great.

As for the tires, I used Eagle One Wet Tire Shine with Tire Swipes. I've really come to like this stuff.

What did you use on the chrome
Nice to see chrome on a late model :)

I used Mother's Chrome Polish on the chrome bumpers. It was an old bottle that I've had for years. None of my 3 current vehicles has chrome on them, so it was nice to put this to some use. Worked great too.

Great Work!!!!

I used to use that, but I always got sling with it. Now I've switched to BnB and don't plan to go back.

I do get some sling, but it isn't bad at all as long as I let it sit overnight, or blot it with a towel.

what is UPP?

How did you use the oxyclean on the interior?

UPP is "Ultimate Paint Protection", a polymer sealant by 4 Star Products. Excellent stuff! :bigups

With the Oxyclean, I just used a bucket, put in 2 scoops, and used a brush, dunking it in the bucket, then scrubing the floor mats and carpet, as well as upholstery where needed. I then used a Wet/Dry vac to remove most of the soil and moisture. It was amazing how dark the water in the Wet/Dry vac was when I was done! :eek

Can you use a lil green machine to remove the oxyclean mix? I've never thought about using it on the interior. Going to pick up a tub of it this week and do mine.

I'm curious about UPP...

How would you compare the looks with Z2? How does the slickness compare?

Regards,

Dan.

I keep looking at these pics and wishing mine looked like that. I have a lighter shade of green but dont look like that.

To be fair, I can't really compare the looks between Zaino and UPP since I didn't use the UPP on a car that I had previously used Zaino on. So I just can't say how much difference there would be until I try it on my own cars.

My "impression" though, is that UPP does look a little warmer than what I might get with Zaino....but again, I'm not sure as I didn't do a side by side comparison.

With regard to slickness, UPP definitely wins that battle hands down!

Here are some before and after pics of the floor mats. I don't know what happened to the shot I took of both floor mats together for the after shot, but I did get a picture of the previously more dirty mat from the drivers side for the "after" pic. Again, I used the Oxy Clean method described by GSRStilez:

I use them both - UPP is much slicker than Z2 -but I think Z2 lasts longer. general concensus is that 3xUPP = 6or7 coats of Z2 though.
