Detailed a sweet Porsche 928GT (pics)

Fellow Autopian, B737GDog, wanted to get his gorgeous 1989 Porsche 928GT looking sharp so we got together and I did a complete detail of his car. The car already looked great, just needed some work to sharpen it to the edge. Took me 8 hours to do it but I think the results were worth the effort.

Here's what I did:

*Detailed the interior (extensive vacuuming, cleaned all leather and interior surfaces, conditioned leather)

*Hand washed the engine using Griots engine cleaner, soap, water and an old mitt.

*Washed with Pinnacle's body lotion shampoo

*Polished with 3M SMR, PC, and yellow Meguiars pad

*Removed small oxidized areas with DACP and yellow CMA pad

*Waxed with Souveran

*Protected wheels with AIO

Got a great compliment when the owner told me the car never looked better and he was glad someone as picky as him was detailing the car. The car has 47,000 miles on it and with a little minor work on some pieces could be concours ready, its that nice.

The pics are OK. It was getting dark, no sun at all, and I'm not as talented a photographer as some of you are. But these will give you an idea of how the car looks:

Gotta love red! I am starting to see Redcar GUY's facination with red a little better lately. 5 of the last 7 cars I've done have been red. I've got a red one on Friday to do too. I've decided that if I ever have a show car then I'm going to have a red one. It looks really really nice when its all shined up.

I'm a big fan of the 928 and you definitely did it justice. Love the way the paint looks, damn good for an older car.:up

928's are my favorites. Very well done! No clay needed?

My folk's friend had a 1987 white 928S. It was such a joy to ride in.

Good work.

How much more work to be concours ready?

Eric

Not a lot of work, IMO. Some pieces need replacing, like that roof mount antenna whose rubber base was disintegrating. And there were little pieces here and there that needed some TLC, like the tinted plastic door sills that said "928". Then there's the usually undercarriage and wheelwell cleaning. Stuff like that. The interior is practically showroom new, really amazing.

I think as is the car can win its class in a local Porsche club show. On a larger level I think it can hold its own. On a national level concours you'd need to address all the little things and that's when economies of scale come into play. 928 parts are scarce and expensive. It would take a motivated and focused owner to track down everything needed and damn the cost. But the car in its current condition is an excellent candidate for that kind of effort.

Nope. First I thought, yeah, let's clay. Then after washing I checked the car closely and felt it wasn't needed.

those are some great before pics.. where are the "after" pics???:nixweiss

j/k ;)

the car looks great...want to do my truck? :xyxthumbs

Thanks again for the effort Bret. Now if it would just stop raining I could enjoy the car. For anyone considering purchasing a Porter Cable, I highly suggest buying one as it allows you to do things you just cannot do by hand.

Another nice job, Bret :xyxthumbs BTW, I've found that 928 wheelwells and undercarriages actually clean up rather well, you'd be surprised at how they come back from the dead.

And B737GDog, :xyxthumbs :xyxthumbs on your choice of car (from a guy who drove them for years- some fond memories there).

Glad to hear your interior is holding up. The panels in the luggage compartment (under the quarter glass) can really warp if the sun cooks them too long.

<-----I think my subheading is in order...;)

928s aren't my favorites. I like the classic 356s and Speedsters, and the brand new Boxster S and 911C4S.

I'm still up in the air about the Cayenne, though. One thing's for sure: it's damn fast!!:D

Great job!

:wavey

Nice work Bret! :bow

Now we know why you get all the lizzadies! :D

Too bad you couldn't make it the Hamptons this weekend, we could rake in the cash like Johnny Depp in Blow. Soooo many nice cars in need of TLC, and owners desparate to spend their bucks!

How ironic!!! I have a job to detail a 1991 Porsche 928 on Saturday! Its in rough shape a lot of oxidation. I just had a rotary overnighted to me from CMA as mine fried itself.
