I'm stepping into this section for the first time...wish me luck. :nervous2:



It’s so funny…just a few days ago I was wondering what it might be like to de-swirl the ‘Titanic’. I need not wonder any longer. This truck belongs to a family who has been very close with mine for thirty years. Last summer I detailed two of their daily drivers, a 2004 Honda Accord and a 1999 Volkswagen New Beetle, the latter sporting a fancy custom paint job. They were very satisfied with both jobs so I was contracted this year to look after their weekend warrior, this red GMC Yukon XL was just back to Portland from a jaunt to the Oregon coast. And the interior brought TONS of sand with it.



They requested the full Monty minus total paint correction. I’m thankful for this as it has GM’s rock-hard clearcoat but I struck back with Menz SIP. This rig had been at the mercy of a hack at one point in its life. The truck was COVERED in holograms, swirls, and there was even wax on the plastic and in and around the badges. But because this was not full correction, I did what I could but was able to bust it out in about 13 hours. I even astonished myself. The paint is not 100% but it's miles ahead of where it was. Overall I can sleep soundly knowing the customer was thrilled with how it looked. They were more concerned about the interior than anything else.



For those of you down on your vehicle dimensions, the Yukon XL 2500 4WD breaks the scale at 6,600 pounds and stretches the tape measure at 219.3” long, 78.8” wide, and 75.7” tall. Miles per gallon? If you dare ask it's about 10 mpg on a good day.....with a tail wind. A dainty vehicle this is not. It drives like a Cadillac, though. :heelclick



Process



Exterior Clean

Wash with Dawn to strip exterior clean

Dry with Waffle Weave MF towel (only took one, amazingly)

Clay using Griot’s clay and Speed Shine for lubricant



Exterior Polish

Griot's Random Orbital (very similar to the PC)

Menz SIP w/LC Orange

Menz 106FF w/LC Green



Exterior Protection

One coat of 4-Star UPP - Hand applied and cured for 45 minutes

Dressed Tires with Griot's Long Lasting Tire Dressing

Dressed wheel arches with Griot's Undercarriage Spray

Dressed Engine Bay with Stoner's Trim Shine (cleaned with APC 4:1)



Interior

Vacuum interior thoroughly to remove sand and other beach debris (like tree bark )

Use air compressor to blast sand out of cracks

Sprayaway glass cleaner on all glass surfaces

Griot's Interior Cleaner on Leather Seats

Soak, clean, and treat black rubber cup holder inserts



Onward ho to the photos. And because I know it will be overlooked. Total time spent was 13 Hours



When I picked up the truck it was cool and overcast. I was not complaining because there is nothing I hate more than washing a huge vehicle in direct sunlight and heat. Overall, the truck was VERY clean as most of these have just been abused to hell and back. That and it only has 41,000 miles on it.

Quite a bit of the beach came back with it...

The joys of an oversized garage...IT FITS!!!

Not too gritty but definitely in need of a clay.

Like I said...the paint is MUCH better but still not 100%. The client was overjoyed, though so I'm happy.

I also fixed what the hack had done to it last...



No more wax around the key hole.

And the pillar is looking good. And the LSP is now on the paint WHERE IT BELONGS.

She also loved that the arches are black again...anything to make 'em happy.
