Detail shop horror

So I went into a detail shop a couple of days ago to get a price to fully detail my car. After reading here, I knew what I wanted. I told him, clay, polish, wax and LSP. He quotes me a price that seems pretty decent. This guy has a detail shop, nice size, so I figure he knows what he is doing. I ask him about a couple of spots on my car and if he thinks they might be gotten out (polish, clay). He sends for one of his guys who comes back with the hugest piece of clay (about 1.5 pounds) that I have ever seen, and starts to clay the spots. The thing was, though, the bottom of the clay that he used on my car was black, filthy, very very very filthy. The clay was blue. He didn't even knead of fold it over, just went at it with that filthy clay and told me that clay wouldn't get it out. I left kind of wondering if I should let him do the detail. Maybe I should find someone else. first impressions.....:wall

Your first impression is always about the best...if you don't think you can trust him then don't!

Over the years that I have been detailing...I've talked to many people that I can tell don't want to trust me with their cars...what that is based off ...I don't know.

I know some people think that the large store front detail shops with all kinds of cars and multiple workers running around...have to be better than me working on one car in my garage...I can see both sides very clearly...In your case..if he is making big promises on getting stains, scratches, etc out...then I would be leery...when I look at cars like this...I talk about best practices...I think most of this will come out but then I won't really know until I get started...this way you don't set yourself up for failure and a unsatisfied customer...in other words you have to give the customer reasonable expectation of the outcome.

He took a filthy piece of clay and, without kneading it and folding it to a clean side, rubbed it on your car, and you're wondering if you should let him detail your car?
Be afraid, be very afraid.
