Destructive tire dressings?

The Michelin website warns against tire dressings that contain petroleum distillates and paraffinic hydrocarbons, presumably because they are destructive to tire rubber. Three questions:

1) What tire dressings now sold on the market contain petroleum distillates and paraffinic hydrocarbons?

2) If there are any, are these products in fact harmful to tire rubber?

3) Has anyone in fact ever seen a tire damaged by the regular use of a tire dressing?

Just flip the bottle over to the back label and read at the bottom, usually it will say contains petroleum's....

Typically the clear gel looking kind are what you want to avoid. Most milky looking ones are water based but you still need to double check.

Because there are soooo many different brands making one or the other or both I can't say for sure who's making what.

I can think of a list of things more destructive to tires than dressings which are applied properly.

That said, I've never witnessed degradation.

But, being cautious never, ever hurts. I agree with Josh about using water based products if you want to be safe.

JoshVette, why do you mention the clear gels? Do they contain penetrating agents?

I would say this much: my foam tire swipes disintegrate faster when I use NXT Tech Protectant and Eagle One Tire Shine, both silicone-y dressings. Both products are far from my favorites anyway. Also happened with original formula Meguiar's Endurance tire dressing, a gel.
