Deployed for a year, need advice on paint care

It'll be more than a year actually. You may have heard on the news how the DoD extended the deployment of US Army active duty forces for 3 months. Now troops in Iraq instead of being deployed for a minimum of 1 year, we'll be there for 15 months minimum.

My wife will be keeping my 06 Silver GTI, which I've had for little over a year and the paint is in great condition, thanks to OTC Meguiars products (mainly).

I am ready to do some online buying and i'm looking for a combo that will protect my paint for at least 13 months.

I have:

Clay (Meguiars)

Collinite 845

Meguiars NXT line waxes

Thinking on buying:

A PC 7424 (finally)

Some sort of polisher (need advice)

The solution that will last as long as my deployment

I have already tried Collinite and it was impressive, but I don't know if it will last that long. While I'm gone my wife will just wash the car (with the techniques I've taught her) or use the touchless car washes.

Thanks!

First let me say THANK YOU for your defense of this country. I wish you a safe and speedy return.

Now, I do not know of any combo of products that will "truly" last that long under normal daily driving conditions. My only advice would be to possible seek out a fellow Autopian and work out a maintance schedule. That way you at least know that it is properly being taken care of until you return. :usa

That's a great idea actually. While I think I'll do okay with the PC, I'm not sure even the hardest waxes are up to the task. Even though we don't get snow, we do get a harsh summer.

So, anyone from the Savannah, GA area? We can work something out.

Otherwise I'm still open for product ideas.

Thanks :)

I also must say, Thank you for your service and dedication. One of my best friend was just currently deployed. We will keep you in our prayers for a safe return.

If you are looking for durability, a zaino combo would hold up really well. I think 13 months is pushing it with any product, but I think with several layers of zaino, you can easily go well past 6 months. If you are interested in the zaino route, the following would be very durable:

Z5pro

Z2pro

CS

If you want balls to the walls durability, do 3 coats of Z5pro, Z2pro, and then CS over a couple days.

If you are in Tampa, FL, I will do your car for you, for the entire year you are gone, free of charge.

Not exactly but I can make my wife drive there! ;)

No I'm a little more up north. I'm stationed in Fort Stewart, Georgia. That's the northeast coast of the state, half an hour away from South Carolina.

Thanks though, I would've definitely signed up!

Hey Greg, which one is CS?

Aguilar - You should try Polycharging Collinite 845iw. To my knowledge, nothing else out there will last as long as that combo - I've seen excellent beading and durability results from Zaino but IMHO it doesn't provide the bird etch protection that comes with Collinite.

You might want to tell your wife to Aquawax or Zaino CS or Opti-Seal the car from time to time... any of those will boost the protection significantly, and they can be applied in as little as 10 minutes after a wash.

Someone on these boards, step up and help out. If I was closer, I would definately take care of it. I will even supply the products that the detailer uses.

Agreed 100%. If it was in Austin, it would be a done deal.

No guys. I've spend hours and hours detailing too and I know it's hard work (even with the right tools).

I'll be making money, i will gladly pay somebody to do it.

Any info on polycharging and what do I need to buy to do it? I've been away from this boards for a little bit.

Back to work now. 1SG wants to reports. :p

Polycharger is a wax booster put out by the people behind Autopia. It's this little bottle of green goo with an eyedropper that you use to put a little bit into a mixing bottle. Then you add wax or sealant and shake. It claims to boost durability by up to 400% - I haven't had it long enough to comment as to that aspect, but I've got Polycharged 845iw that's sat outside on a Camry for about a month and a half now, and it still looks like it was waxed yesterday. I would figure 845iw to last about 8 months by itself, so Polycharged 845 should last over a year, in theory.

Honestly, I think if the car is going to just be wife driven, and touchless car washed, I would definately go the Zaino route knowing what I know now.

That stuff just has the durability of freaking rhino lining, LOL.

Buy yourself the following and be done with it, then let us know how long you think it lasted....LOL.

ZFX

Z2

Z8

ZCS

Thats all you need for months of protection, however, ANY sealant will have a tough time with touchless car washes. But of all of the ones I have tried, or read about, Zaino owns the durability king title!

Hey, thanks for your service for our country!!

From what I've heard in the past the polycharged collinite that themightytimmah recommended would be your best bet.

If you can get the car to the Atlanta area I/we will do a full Zaino detail for no charge. We have a group of local detailers that hang out and it would be our pleasure to help you out. I will send you a PM.

As a former member of the USAR, I wish you God Speed with all the other defenders of our country. Be safe and I hope the time becomes "short" very quickly or better yet this War end even sooner. :bow

Apply whatever you feel comfortable with, get some CS or OS and show your wife how to apply and walk away after a wash/dry session.

Better yet, take Bryan (GMBlack3a) offer. Your car will not only be protected but detailed to it highest possible level. :2thumbs:

Thanks guys, and thank you Bryan for the offer. PM replied.

I will try the polycharger approach. Have to do some reading to figure it all out.

Now I have to convince the wife to show the paint some love and take it on the car when she misses me and the days seem endless. ;)

Well... my wife just found a big flaw in my planning, and she was not happy about me not remembering.

She reminded me of the best part of deployment. It's called leave! Not always granted depending on the mission, but normally we do get 15 days to spend with the family. So if I get it about halfway thru, I'll have time to detail again!

So I guess when that time comes I'll pull this thread for the archived files and post updates and pictures of how whatever wax I use help up for ~8 months. :)
