After reading Frank Canna's (mirrorfinishman) response to the PDTA’s lack of having an explicit mission statement, it sparked my interest to an exercise I performed in my senior level management class a couple weeks back.
As expressed by the professor, this technique was developed by a famous psychologist and believe it or not, works. Once completed, keep it in your view and refer to it whenever you may question how to handle a situation. I find myself looking at it once a week to keep me on path. Here's how it works:
- Choose 2 adjectives that a person you admire exemplifies
- Choose 2 nouns that defines the person you want to be seen as
- Choose 2 adjectives that define how you want your future to be
- Choose 1 talent that a person you admire exemplifies and put it in context to work with your mission statement
Now, with these written down chronologically, you want to take the following format and make your mission statement:
As a ______, _______, ________, _______, I create a ______ and _____ world by _____________________.
My mission statement reads:
As a passionate and polished, motivator and teacher, I create a joyful and comfortable world through remaining positive in demanding environments.
It helps to bounce the statement off someone who knows you well or is good with grammar and writing action statements(i.e.: career objective on resume).
Good Luck.
