Dealer/Transporter Plates

I'm a mobile detailer which I never had this issue until now. I have come across a couple of used car dealers who wish to acquire my services but I'm not allowed to do it on premise. They don't have a plate that I can use and I've been searching online trying to find the answer. From the information I've gathered I'm expected not to move cars. Detailer plates are only used to transport cars from the auction to the dealership. I'm so confused. If anyone can shed some light on this topic it would be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Go down to the vehicle licensing office and ask them, face to face. On line is often confusing and it subject to interpertation by the reader.

Not sure about your state, but VA has "trip permits", they run $3, print online, you could just bill back for the occasion that you need it.

Definitely a state law issue; here in Michigan they do have "In-Transit Repair" plates but I believe they require a dealer-type insurance policy to cover any vehicle you're taking possession of. That being above and beyond the normal GKL and GCL coverages you should already carry.

Talk to some dealers you are working for and see if they know any other dealers with extra plates. I was doing alot of work for a dealer here in CT, he offered to rent me a plate for $500/month, alot but can be worth. He said I would be able to transport any car, use it to drive my own cars without reg/insurance, buy and sell cars as a dealer (would have to do the transactions at his dealership) and auction access. Apparently he was renting plates to a couple other people as well who would buy/sell cars at the auctions. His wife's car had one of his dealer plates on it as well and whatever car he decided to drive for the day, he'd just slap a plate on it. Don't know if the same in NY though, def check with the DMV directly. The dealer told me he would get so many plates depending on the volume he sold, but the laws did change recently in CT I think.

Funny everything he's doing is illegal from what I read. You can't rent plates and you can't use dealer plates to drive personal vehicles because you are just avoiding paying sales tax. I also know you can't put a dealer plate on a vehicle to tow another vehicle. I do appreciate your insight and sounds like it was a pretty sweet deal.

Yeah I never checked into it, but I know he's not the only one doing it by far. I've seen ALOT of cars driving around on dealer plates and obvious they are not dealers. It's definitely different state to state, so maybe it is legal in CT, but not NY. Or possibly it illegal but not enforced so they get away with it, I don't know, just know what a dealer told me and you know how they can be lol.

That seems to be standard where I'm at too. Technically you're not "supposed" to do that (for reasons listed above), but chances are you'll be fine doing it and will get away with it with no problems. I'm thinking of doing the same because dealer/transporter plates are such a PIA to get through the state (here at least).

Utah states in it's law that transporter plates can be used for repair/detail to and from dealerships and my paperwork has gone back and forth between the state four times already for the smallest stupidest clerical errors or anything they can find (i.e. my sign isn't "bolted" to my building "correctly" and a didn't dot an i or cross a t. It's a pain).

Insurance follows the plate>>>

Take your insurance cert/Dec page down to your DMV/Sec of State and get a few In Transit Repair plates. Then buy a special plate magnet or rubber frame so it allows you to quickly mount it to the dealer car.

So just to clarify/verify, what coverages are necessary to get an ITR plate issued? I'm curious if my understanding was incorrect...

To get plate (in MI), you only need to bring in your Garage Keepers liability policy Declarations page showing collision coverage. You would really need to review your needed coverages with your agent to make sure the non-company owned vehicles are protected both when you drive them and when they are at your shop. Some policies have exclusions.

Nice, thanks for the clarification. Sounds like I already have the necessary coverages if I ever needed to get a plate; when I was looking through the SOS site it looked like there were more requirements, though I could be thinking of dealer plates as opposed to ITR plates.

In Pennsylvania just for transporter plates you need alot. Outside of your basic insurance you need a real brick and mortor business. Weekend garage warriors would NOT qualify for it here. You have to have an office, fax machine, landline, and much more. In all honesty I cant see a state giving plates like this to people without more requirements then just insurance. Its things like thisbthat seperate the men from the boys.

Utah is the same way. You need a brick and mortar. Business License. Forty million in insurance. Sign with a foundation buried at least halfway, if not the whole way to the middle of the earth. Mothers maiden name. Blood sample. Official recommendation from the congressman. Proof that you've pulled off a threesome. Among other things. It's a real PIA.
