De-winterizing a Volvo 850R for an Autopian

You could only imagine what I had to work with when using a title like that :D.

The owner, Travis (mesoam), contacted me in regards to having his 1996 Volvo 850R detailed to get rid of the winter wrath. He sent me a couple pics showing the damage of the slush, sand, and general winter damages. The pics didn't look great, but once I got there today and put the car in front of the 500w halogen, it looked worse :(. Given all of this, apart from the heavy swirling and such, the car was "clean". There were very few bonded contaminants, it beaded well, tires were dressed, etc. I'm sure from now on, she will be looking tip-top :xyxthumbs .

Travis is the second owner of this rather rare car. He can't remember ever having it machine polished and by my best judgement, the previous owner hadn't either. Some of the defects were very deep and wouldn't come out 100%. I'd say the car is 95%+ better than it was with a couple stray deep marrs here and there. The chips were greatly reduced and the depth/gloss took on a whole new meaning. Here we go:

Clean

-CG Maxi Suds Wash with Black & Decker pressure washer to assist

-Optimum Clay with CG Maxi Suds to lubricate

-Hi-Temp Tire Cleaner cut 50/50 on tires and wells agitated with respective brushes

-Meguiar's Wheel Brightener cut 3:1 on wheels with respective tools.

Defect Removal

-Hi-Temp Heavy Cut via rotary and LC Cutting Pad @ 1500 rpm (leave residue on panel)

-Optimum Car Polish via rotary and LC Polishing Pad @ 1200 rpm (remove both residues with FK1 #425 assist)

-Optimum Car Polish via rotary and LC Finishing Pad @ 1200 rpm

Protect

-Z6 Wipedown

-Z2 Pro by hand

-Z8 by hand when removing Z2 Pro

-Poorboy's PwS on glass, wheels, and tailpipe

-Meguiar's Hot Shine Tire Foam on tires/wells

-CG VRT on trim

THIS IS WHY PICTURES ON THE INTERNET CAN BE DECEIVING. This is a before shot...

Down right horrifying before and one helluva a difference in the after. Detail after detail, it's simple: just outstanding work! :2thumbs:

Sweet job Sean!!

I'm curious why you use #425 to wipe down only to follow with a polish??

I find #425 too expensive to be used in such a way. I guess I would opt for something like Meguiars #34 or Eagle One QD.

Nice house and the garage seems to be coming along.

Very nice!

I see you were smart regarding getting polish residue on the side trim ;)

Oh, and I also see that the "leave the residue on" approach has worked once again.

That was a lot to do in only 5.5 hours!

Great job in removing those nasty swirls and the paint work looks so much clearer after the swirls are removed :xyxthumbs .

How you compare Hi-Temp Heavy Cut to Power Gloss in term of cutting power when used with a PC and rotary.

Looks AWESOME!!!

Do you find that the HT HC loads the pad fairly quickly? I find that it does and once it loads, it slings out these "slubs" of product--my only complaint. I have tried to use less polish to no avail. The use of a wool pad combats this issue--for me.

The paint really looks great!!

Seth: 425 is only about $25 a gallon...Even S+W is $40. I usually use S+W and will in the future (got a great deal and it cleans better), but didn't have the room nor did I think I would need it this week.

Accumulator: This car was a PITA to tape up...Took me a solid 15 minutes but was very worth it once buffing.

Gen2: PG cuts a touch harder but also dusts a lot. HC gums up a little bit.

ebpcivicsi: Man, I thought I was going crazy!!! This is one car where I used a lot of HC. I wasn't too happy with the heavy residue buildup on the panel. It got to the point where I wish I would have used Powergloss and just dealt with the dust.

RCBuddha: Very good product all around. Mild cleaners, leaves a nice medium gloss sheen, lasts a WHILE (esp on interiors), and is very cost effective. I give it the thumbs up, but will probably be ordering a thick gel for the exterior trim due to its durability. (maybe Meg's 38)

Thank you everyone.

very nice work, I can agree with you more about the Internet pictures. I know plenty of people the car club I am in that submit pictures that look great and when I see there car they look so poor.

just to be clear i am a detail freak myself (see door pannel/engine pic) however i knew my paint was beyond my skill so based upon the forum members reccomendations i contacted Sean...

It was still cloudy today so not much sun light to show the depth however here are some more pics to showcase his work (and my own :xyxthumbs )
