Cyclo Users: Which Pads?

I've decided to buy a Cyclo; I'd like to know what type of pads other users prefer: the bonnet-type pads, or the velcro-backed pads (which would require the rubber pad holder).

Do the bonnets really last much longer; are they difficult to remove when you want to change pads? Right now I figure if the bonnet pads are pretty easy to take off/put on, that's what I'll order.

Also, does anyone use the "light cutting wool pad"; comments or suggestions?

Thank you.

OMG, *NO* do *not* buy the bonnet-style pads :scared: NO way to overstate this. They really *are* that hard to put on/take off. I keep a few around just to remind myself of how hard life used to be (and that's not a joke). Once you wrestle the velcro pad holders onto the head of the machine you'll see what I mean. Fortunately, once you get the velcro pad holders on there, you might not ever have to take them off.

The velcro pad holders last forever- I got mine when they first came out (late '80s IIRC) and they're still working just like new.

The pads are the same, the only difference is whether they're glued to the rubber bonnets or to a piece of velcro. OK, one advantage to the bonnet-style pads is that they aren't ever contaminated with velcro slubs like the velcro-backed pads often are. Still not a worthwhile trade-off by any means.

When I was younger, with, admittedly, a lower hassle tolerance, I just used one product with the Cyclo for most everything, and even washed the pads on the machine- just to avoid struggling with those bonnet-style pads.

Using the velcro pad holders will not only make it immeasurably easier to change pads, but will allow the use of non-Cyclo brand pads.

If you decide to use MF bonnets, some fit over wool (I don't like these very much) and some fit over foam (use cutting pads, it's a better fit and they seem to work better).

Only used the wool pads under bonnets, so I can't help with those otherwise.

I couldn't agree with Accumulator more. I nearly sold my Cyclo because of those bonnet-style pads. Once I got the velco-style pads, life was soooo much easier. Pad too saturated with product? Peel them off and put a new one on there and you're ready to go.

Nothing but velco!!! Just finished one this afternoon going through 3 sets of orange. No way would I have wanted to fold over, position, fold back. Modern technology is great!!

For what it's worth... I had two Cyclos, sold one (new), and have relegated the other to a (very expensive) carpet/mat scrobber.

Mike Phillips said it best: "I can't envision a situation where'd I'd say 'Wow, this is a situation that only the Cyclo can handle.'"

Hey, it is a fine machine, but I don't think it outworks a PC, by much.

Me? In day to day use, if the PC doesn't 'cut' it, then a rotary combo will.

It just doesn't have a place in my environment...

Just my opinion of a fine machine. (Avoid the platic imitation...)

Also, the newer Cyclo pads are soooo much better. My brother said that he used to go through about 3 sets of green on one plane due to the backing coming off from the foam. The new pads are not glued back anymore and he recently did 3 planes with one set!!!!

WCD- That's good to know. I was lucky enough to miss the bad version of the Cyclo pads, I had enough of the pre-adhesion-issues ones that I didn't need to order during the problematic version.

Jimmy Buffit- Yeah, I'm starting to push the Cyclo as simply a personal preference decision rather than something that's actually that much more capable than the PC. While I too turn to the rotary for real correction, now that there are 4" pad setups for the PC I don't think the Cyclo's added capabilities really amount to all that much. Well, for polishing at least; I don't think the PC can match it for scrubbing carpets. But just get me going on that personal preference :D :o

Oh, one other thing does come to mind- when used with MF bonnets for LSP removal, I get *far* more complete removal (at least with just one pass) using the Cyclo than I do with the PC. That's still a pretty limited advantage I suppose....

Accumulator,

And also to add the great longevity of the Cyclo, the overall craftmanship quality, and even heirloom status it can attain :D
