I would like to get your professional opinions on a question. This might be stupid to ask, but here goes...

How many of you pro detailers work with car delaerships in prepping their vehicles? Do you think this would be a good avenue to pursue steady business, or should I focus my atention on the private sector? Your input is greatly appreciated.
 
Often dealers only want quick jobs, nothing like what a Autopian is used to.



I personally like sticking to the personal side, but when you need the steady cash, sometimes a dealer is the way to go.



(Dealers will often pay less for a detail than a normal customer).

I think you just have to find the right dealers. I came across an autobroker who does alot of work on ebay and autotrader and he understands that a good detail is gonna cost good money. However, I would concentrate on gaining a clientle, but business isn't gonna come out and bite you in the ***.:up
 
Here's an idea. What would happen if when you did 'dealer work', you did it this way:



When you do a car, you either completely delay payment until the car is sold or only take 1/2 of the money upfront. I'm seeing a proposition like this: "Mr. Dealer, I am so confident that my $150 detail will help sell this car faster and for a higher price than you can get for it in its present condition or with a $75 detail that I will make you a deal. Pay me $75 now, and the other $75 when you sell it."



Obviously, you would have to work with a dealer you trusted (or do a nightly 'lot check'), but I can see a dealer being interested in this-they know they're getting better than the $75 detail, can sell the car quicker and for more, and it doesn't hurt their cashflow nearly as bad since you don't get paid in full until they do.



Just a thought...
 
I'm in the negative camp when it comes to dealers. I have four major, domestic Brands within a half mile.



I've never (consciously) solicited business from them.



Took me awhile to understand that the words Autopian and Dealer are like oil and water... they just do not go together.



I just did a new Viper today, black, 940 miles. Shameful that a Dealer would sell such a car, with such swirls. Rumor is the SM drove the car for three weeks as a Demo! It went thru the Dealer auto car wash WAY too many times!



My client, a wealthy South American, loves BLACK cars, and is quite understanding.

How would you go about proving that it was your detail work that sold the car faster and brought in more money?
