Credit Fraud

what's up everyone? I need everyones input, advice and help! My fiancee has only one credit card right now, which I am anal about her paying on time, and remaining in good standings. Recently she applied for a new credit card, and was denied with the error message for being delinquent with payments, etc... We didn't think anything of it for a couple days, and just saw a commercial for "freecreditreport.com" We did the whole process, got her credit report, and turns out her sister has charged up atleast $3K, which might not seem like alot, but is HUGE for a college student, especially for us, trying to move out, and buy a new car for her (she drives a 95 geo prism w/ 103k miles  ) Also, even if we somehow came up with the money to pay off all the debt, it wont change the fact that her credit is all screwed up.. I mean these payments are more than 400 days late?!!?!?! The rep @ experian recommended to press charges which is the only way for this to be removed from her credit, and not have any adverse effects. I mean, this is New York.. if her credit is screwed, this is going to affect us when we want a house, new car, etc.. To top if off, her sister has done this to her parents, and brother, to the tune of 100s of 1000s of dollars!!! First of all, I want to know what you guys think of "freecreditreport.com" ??? it seems very very legit, and works in conjunction with Experian, which from what I understand is a large, quality firm? Can anyone shed some light on this? Any advice? Recommendations?!?! Help please?

That is a tough one. I am sure she probably has mixed feelings about filing charges against here sister but maybe in the end it would be best for both of them. It sounds like her sister is a habitual offender and she needs to be held accountable for what she has done. Like you said, unless you file charges this isn't going to come off her credit and you both will suffer for it for years to come. From the sound of it you really already know what you need to do...

Just remember this about freecreditreport.com...

When you order your free report here, you will begin your free trial membership in Triple AdvantageSM Credit Monitoring. If you don't cancel your membership within the 30-day trial period, you will be billed $14.95 for each month that you continue your membership.

yup i read the disclaimer about the 14.95 per month. honestly, after this, 14.95/month isn't a bad thing per month to be able to check up on our credit

thats sucks man. If she has done it before, she needs to be taught a lesson. Maybe not by the law, maye tough love.

Hows the rsx doin?

You can get 1 free credit report from each of the three agencies for free once a year. That is a glance at your credit report every 4 months, which is exactly what I do.

Go HERE and provide the correct information and you are set. Again, this is absolutely free. NO strings attached. See HERE.

How did her sister charge $3000? How did your fiancee not notice?

it was on a different credit card which goes to a different address.. basiccally she stole her identity and the only way she found out was through the credit report

So your fiancee did not apply for the other credit card?

It's easy then. Notify the credit card company of the fraud and demand they correct her credit report. Do it in writing, by registered mail.

When you do that though you will have to sign a waiver alowing the credit card company to pursue it which will result in charges against the sister being filed. If there are no charges filed against the sister then by default your girl friend is responsible. Can't have it both ways.

Time for some tough love against the sister. She's got a lousy track record already and the longer she gets away with it, the worse it will get. If no one holds her feet to the fire, she'll never learn to be accountable.

They might want you to sign something to that effect, but you do not need to. It's just a tactic they use in the hope that you'll pay off the debt and save them the cost of taking the sister to court.
