Credit Cards

So, I'm credit card shopping at the moment. We've had Chase Slate for over 14 years and its been 25% since I last remember. Fought with them earlier this week to get it lowered. Never missed a payment, always payed over minimum. Nothing they could do for me, ok, that's the way it was going to be. Closed the account. Will be paying that balance off shortly. That being said I like to keep one card for emergencies or random spur of the moment things. I have a good savings, but that's for slow weeks at work.

Can any of you guys guide me in the right direction? Most major carriers offer 12mo 0% then 11-24% after that. Been leaning twords American Express. Just want a basic card. No cash back, no travel points, etc and no annual fees.

Credit cards.com is good place to start

American Express charges a yearly fee, right ? Is that ok?

I think the best rates might be at a credit union...

There is an Am. Express card with no annual fee. It's a lower balance card, but I don't need much. Haven't thought about the Credit Union, even more-so my bank.

Better credit means lower rates obviously. You'll want to search around. If you aren't looking at credit karma I would consider it. They do have helpful suggestions and stuff

I wouldn't of closed that card though if I were you. Just cut it up and never use it. Average age of open accounts is a factor on your credit report. Probably going to take a hit closing an account you had for 14 years

I know it wasn't the best idea closing the account, but my temper got the best of me. I really only used it for the auto draw bills like my EzPass and Sirius satellite radio. Theres a little bit left on a medical bill, but not that much.Checked with my bank and they do offer a card with 8%apr. Credit as of last month was in the mid 700's so I'm not too worried. Still shopping around. Those cards posted do look really good.

I understand that. Trying to reason with creditors is like grinding your head against a cheese grater

Well when you neglect to use a credit card.. Theyll either decrease you're credit limit and or close you're account anyways..
It's not a big factor anyways
Big factors are ontime/late payments and revolving account balance...Dept to credit ratio is biggest factor
Mine used to be like 620-640 as my revolving credit was too high to my limit even though I always pay on time..
Now I'm around 795 just by getting my ratio down a certain %bracket
