Craftsman C3 19.2 volt Orbital Buffer / Polisher

Now I already know that this buffer will not remove any defects. This would be a Father's Day present for my father.

My Dad just bought a 2006 Ford F150 and I am sending him a 12oz bottle of Optimum Poliseal and a bottle of OCW so that he can clean up the truck and provide protection until I can get back home in the fall when I will give the truck a concours level full correction detail. Applying the PS by hand will get very tiring for my dad who just turned 69. I know he will just apply it like a wax and then buff it off without working the PS in. So no correction at all and it probably won't polish much either.

He has several of the 19.2 C3 tools already so he has multiple battery packs including a lithium-ion one that works with all the C3 tools. I thought that this Craftsman C3 19.2 volt Orbital Buffer / Polisher would be better than doing it by hand.

Has anyone here used this tool before? I can't find many details about it. Its the same paragragh description on all the websites that a google search brings up.

Is the pad a permanent pad? If not is it a hook&loop velcro backing plate?

Will I be able to use 6" or 6.5" LC pads with it. I want to send him a green LC pad with it. I don't want him using the terry or MF bonnets that pull over a permanent foam pad that are held on with a tie string or elastic band.

If it is a permanent foam pad do you think that the polisher can be modified by removing the foam pad and gluing a piece of velcro to the backing plate? Or if the original backing plate can be remove to install a real one?

the third review on the page you linked:

Haven't used the supplied bonnets as I hate draw strings(-1 star). Went on the net and picked up some 6" Microfiber, Terry cloth, foam Bonnets, and a Lambswool 6 Inch Leveling Pad. Around 30 bucks, + a 6" Dual-Action Hook & Loop Flexible Backing Plate. Around 20 bucks. As you can see, spent more on pads than the hardware to turn them.

I see that it is on sale at Sears this week. I'm going to go to Sears tomorrow to check it out myself.

And I did see the review but the tool just doesn't look like the backing plate is removeable and will accept a 3/8" thread backing plate.

Call me crazy, but I think it'll make more problems than its worth - sounds to me like your dad is like a 'normal' person, and not a detailing freak like us. Meaning he'll use it, while wearing belt buckles slamming against the car, while wearing his wedding ring and scratching it against the paint, dropping mf towels onto the ground and just picking them up again, etc... etc...

That piece of equipment will not run very fast. Not enough rpm to do anything but apply wax, liquid. JMO Took the one I purchased back for refund in a hurry too.

Yeah, you guys are right I checked it out in the store the other day and it is kind of bulky even without the battery pack on the top. It didn't look like you could replace the backing plate with a DA style backing plate either. Dad will have to wait until the fall.
