Convicted Criminals to Wash Cars for Free

HOFFMAN ESTATES, Ill. - Carwash operators in this Chicago suburb may see a slight decline in business for awhile, thanks to the work of local criminals.

Beginning Jan. 4, nonviolent offenders convicted of misdemeanors such as low-level drug charges, traffic violations or DUIs, will instead find themselves washing residents' cars as part of their court-ordered community service, according to the Daily Herald. Schaumburg Township employees will also volunteer their time.

The criminal carwash will be open from 9 a.m. to 1:30 at the township's office parking lot in Hoffman Estates, and run every Saturday for eight weeks. The washes will be free of charge to township residents.

Previously, the program consisted of having prisoners clean police or Chicago Transit Authority Vehicles or pick up trash in vacant lots.

Robert Fecarotta, the township's highway commissioner, called the project a "way of giving back to the community."

Interesting concept. I thought the convicts already washed cars, police cars. I am pretty sure no autopians will be in line to have their car(s) washed. That is unless it is inside and the memeber may use their own supplies.

Who is paying for the "free" car wash? The residents who pay taxes.
