Contour or Flat Backing Plate for PC?

Hello folks,

New member here, & my first post. It concerns the PC 7336SP I received for Christmas.

I've read a lot of posts here the last few days, including the Definitive PC Accessorizing post. A lot of info available, including some on backing plates. But I haven't found much on contoured or flat backing plates.

I know that PC sells both - 18001 (flat) & 18002 (contoured). I think the Griot's package contains the 18001, & I read here that someone else sells a package (Coastal Tool maybe?) that includes 18002. Is there 1 that is better for polishing, is it a personal preference, or are there applications for both?

Thanks - I'm sure I'll have more questions!

You came to the right place for detailing advice.

Unfortunately, I don't have an answer for you. I recently received my 7424 from Coastal and it came with the 18002. I would like to know if this backing plate is worth anything or if I should get a 6" backing plate made by LC. I would like to figure this out before I waste $20 on another backing plate.

I have some rather tight cures on my Lightning at the side step of the bed. I used my rigid backing plate in there and as soon as I saw a flexible one, I ordered one, but haven't got around to using it in the small radius corners yet. Why not have bot available, just in case?

~One mans opinion / observation~

“Durofoam Variable Contact Pads have a concave surface that encapsulates compounds and reduces splatter. giving more control over the pad, and the ability to vary pad pressure.

I started out using the flat pads but once I tried the DVC they are all I use (I also ‘wear’ a lot less product now) it's probaly paid for itself by now

~Hope this helps~

Actually, I think he is referring to the backing plate not the pad itself.

Contour

Flat

These are the two different PC backing plates. One is contour, one is not. Here are the 2 versions that CMA sells:

Flexible

Normal

Very true Gonzo, as long as they both might be of value. That's really what my question is, I guess - is there a use for both, or would the $20 be better spent somewhere else?

Very true Ice9. From what I have read on here so far, there are a ton of different pads! I'll have questions on those too, but it looks like the best I can hope for there will be to narrow the selections down & then make my choices based on personal preferences.

But - this question refers to the 2 backing plate configurations I'm aware of: contoured & flat. Which one?

Contoured vs. flat- don't worry about it, IMO. Not enough of a difference to matter. I wore out an '02 , got an '01, no big diff. BTW, the 18001 is VERY similar to the "regular" plates from SandAll (a common supplier to CMA and others).
