Consumer Reports Wax Test...

One word of caution - this test / article is 5 years old & there have been a lot of new developments in the "car finish care" arena in that time.

I took some umbrage at the opening line in the "Polishes for persnickety people" sidebar on the last page. I don't think that waxing a car is drudgery!! I enjoy it, find it relaxing & rewarding to see the results of a thorough detail. And I suspect that the majority of the citizens on this forum feel the same way as me.

Just my 2¢ . . .

Not only is it old results they are not even comparing apples to apples
There are glazes, cleaner waxes, pure carnuaba waxes, spray and wipe waxes.

This test is for people that just put a coat of wax on the car, but the results of "The 3 step products did give the paint deeper, richer appearance making the black test panels look blacker".

If thats the case I'm proud to be persnickety :D

Ya those are all consumer products that i cant say that i use or would ever use. JM$0.02

Well, i will bet the farm the person doing the tests induced the marring themselves with their crappy applicators, or crappy towels.

I think they should have hired a professional detailer to apply the products, and had an impartial observer score the products with comments from the detailer on the ease of use, trim staining.

If someone did a review on yogurt, who doesnt like yogurt, what would his review sound like lol.

I bet if i could make anyone of those products look like a million bucks-on my vehicle anyways hahahah.

Well that is a good point, however I think it is worth it to point out that most people don't see detailing their car as a source of relaxation. I think because it is consumer reports that they did the right thing in having a person who is not detail oriented apply the products, as that is the way most of the consumers would be applying the products.

I mean how many times have you seen someone washing their car with the sponge from their sink and the soap that goes with it? These are the people who are going to be reading Consumer Reports and then applying the research results onto their own automobile.

Yeah, I recall some tests they did and I even recall writing them about tire dressings they reviewed and I used the word "persnickety" for them while corresponding. I think I only threw out their acknowledgment of my letter a few months ago. They basically said thank you for the response and something about the range of products available in stores IIRC.

haha...down on page 4 there talking about the 3 step line ups of mothers and meguiars....its kinda funny. basicly saying that cleaning and polishing is a waste of time......

Interesting... in a similar test the CR had many years ago, (15-20 or so) the Meguiar's Cleaner Wax came in first... now it's last! :D

While a lot of people rely on CR for information, I personally think they are less than reliable.
Case in point. A motor vehicle was a CR "Best Buy" at one time and is now one of the lowest rated based on problems with that "Best Buy" vehicle.
So, were they right the first time or are they right the last time.
Or were they wrong both times.
I lean towards the "wrong both times" side for most of their information, including the so called wax test.

This is almost as bad as relying on Consumer Reports for audio advice. They never get the best products and they never test them properly. It's a worthless publication except for some appliance and car history.

Gosh Don, why don't you just tell us how you really feel about them? :D

Because I was taught if you can't say something nice, don't say anything at all :lmfao

I hope CR didn't test all the waxes with the application method used for the article's opening picture. Seemed like a tad bit too much product.

If CR rated CR it wouldn't rate to well.

When I worked at Best Buy CR rated Hi-Fi VCRs and the Symphonic was rated a "Best Buy". Those VCRs flew off the shelf. The also flew back to the store and were exchanged for a more reliable brand. CR failed to mention in their report that the Symphonic brand of VCRs were also the most returned.

Both Nu Finish products seemed to hold its own though. Anyone care to comment about the properties and benefits of using Nu Finish on a regular basis (once a year)...
