Completed First DA-Powered Exterior Today

My son-in-law, who`s had a PC DA machine for about a year, came over today to give me a hand and some pointers to help me get accustomed to my new GG6.

Worked on my wife`s 2013 RAV4. This car has a few paint issues, but we weren`t able to correct all of them.

Work done included:

  1. Complete wash with 2-bucket system.
  2. Clay the windshield and entire car, using Nanoskin medium and light pads, as well as Meguiar`s clay...all done with Meguiar`s Instant Detail as the lubricant.
  3. Polished with Chemical Guys V36 using orange LC pad. (2 passes on the hood with this)
  4. Polished again with Menzerna PL Power Lock Polymer Sealant using white LC pad.
  5. Topped with Chemical Guys Butter Wet Wax using red LC pad.
  6. Cleaned all windows with Invisible Glass.
  7. Sprayed tires with No-Touch Satin product.
  8. Used Chemical Guys pad conditioner and pad cleaner products.

Comments on how things went:

  1. The windshield has a lot of "specks" in it. I did 6 passes using the Medium Nanoskin pad...and 3 passes using the Light Nanoskin pad. Conclusion: Those specks are pits in the windshield, most likely from road debris...and they`re not coming out! We gave it a pass with the V36 as well.
  2. I did 6 passes on the hood, also pitted with plenty of road debris tiny little pits, with the Medium Nanoskin pad....2 passes with the Light Nanoskin pad....and 1 pass with regular clay. Upon all this "claying", I wasn`t convinced Nanoskin pads worked any better than clay...in fact, I`d say the clay seemed to work better. While the pits are still there, I must say many of them are much less noticeable now.
  3. The PL went on quite well....gotta say I was impressed.
  4. Not as impressed with the CG Butter Wet wax....I don`t think it did anything to improve the gloss. (Maybe should have applied this by hand vs the GG6?).
  5. Gotta say the RAV4 looks a WHOLE lot better than it did before.
  6. Not impressed with the No-Touch Satin spray. I don`t like "insane" shine on the tires, but this is just too dull.

Any/all comments welcome! The polish, PL, and wax used were what my son-in-law had on hand...as I don`t read much about CG or Meguiar`s products here, I`m guessing they wouldn`t be the first choice by most?

Anyway...now going to take more Advil!

OzzieMike- Appreciate the report on how your first-go went!

For a first attempt without a do-or-die emphasis on correction, I think that all sounds great.

While I`d have used/recommended some other stuff, everybody has their opinions and just jumping in and *doing that work* was the right thing for you IMO.

Speaking of having opinions ;) The wax topper over the sealant is one of those things that *so* many say you oughta do, but IMO it`s almost always a complete waste. I sincerely doubt that the machine vs. hand application mattered any. I`m still glad that you did it though as your BTDT perspective... "I actually bothered to do this, and gee I dunno..." is better informed than just trying to decide whether or not it`s a great idea based on what people here say about it and then second-guessing yourself about it.

Stop beating yourself up. I doubt anyone could get 100% perfection out of a 4 year old driver.

Heh heh, you`ve been doing showroom-new `vettes for too long ;)

Couldn`t resist....

But seriously, yeah, there`s "perfection" and then there`s "PERFECTION" and you gotta be reasonable.

Some photos of the RAV4 after yesterday`s work:

Overall, it looks much better!

When you drive thru wet white paint (and don`t mention it) ya gotta live with the white specks in the wheel well.

Tried to capture some of the chips in the hood....too many to count!

The windshield chips aren`t coming out, either.

Ronkh....thanks. Yeah, I think I was trying to convince myself they WEREN`T chips and would buff out. No such luck, though.

OzzieMike- Glad you got the pix up, that looks great!

The highway paint *can* be a real challenge! I was able to get it off all but once, but I always felt I was just being lucky. Heh heh, it`s one of those constant-reminder things about lane discipline (and yeah, I can say that in over 40 years of driving I`ve *NEVER* driven over any wet paint). I *will* suggest that the person who drove through it probably didn`t realize that it happened.
