Combos for Silver...

Sorry to start up another silver thread, but after getting an Astral Silver 560SL, I've been wondering what would be the best product combos to make it pop. I plan on entering it in an upcoming show, so I thought you guys might be able to tailor a suggestion. So far I've read about Prime/AJT and UPP or Z2 or Z5, and a bunch of others...but I'm pretty much stumped on what I should order. Right now I'm going for either the Werkstatt combo or UPP.

Here's a picture of the car as it is with a layer of Souveran (Paste) over XMT Finishing Glaze. It looks good, but I want to know if I can get it better!

Thanks you guys! I really appreciate all the help you've given me. :spot

i have a silver c320 that has had many different lsps on it. from aio ksg liquid glass wolfgang sealant and tens of different nubas right now after this past weekends wash i primed the entire thing and have since added five coats of ajt. by far my favorite "pop" that ive seen on my car. you can really see how many waxes dull the color. i cant look at my car in direct sunlight or id show you the swirl free finish in sun. from now on im sold on jeffs two. oh and i just touch it up every wash with 425 and the thing is pretty much slick as snot on a 24-7 basis. its funny watching the flies or other flying bugs land on a side panel and slide off.

I personally like the Prime/AJ combo. It's a very reflective and bright look. I've used Souveran before but the Werkstatt system wows me and it lasts a lot longer.

Hmm...Thanks you guys! After spending a few hours on the board, I think I'm going to have to go with the Prime/AJ combo.

Anyone have any other suggestions or experience with the Werkstatt twins before I order tomorrow?

as far as application the best and most user friendly method ive used was scottwax's tute. id search his as hes explained it a few times.

Thanks for the tip, I'll have to search through the threads and find it. Has anyone ever tried topping AJT with Souveran? I know you can't do it the other way around, but I thought that combo might be intriguing.

Honestly, I'd at least leave it alone for a few days before worrying about topping it.

I think Prime/AJ look really good on their own....

Thanks for the advice Scott! I think I'll take your word on it...Ever since I started seeing the bottom of my Souveran jar, I've started to become a bit protective about it. That Prime/AJ combo looks fantastic. I think it's pretty much made up my mind on what I'm going to be ordering in a few minutes.

Edit: Crap, which formula of Prime should I order? Prime, Prime Strong, or Prime Acrylic?

CDTGaticaW201- I always liked Souveran on my Astral Silver SEC, but that's just me and I'm goofy about what I like on certain cars :o

Be careful polishing that...if it's the original paint the clear is fairly soft (lacquer-based) and *very* thin.

Heh heh, I sympathize with what you go through on those wheels ;)

Nice car, let us know how it turns out. What year is it? (I can never tell the '86-up ones apart.)

Thanks for the help Accumulator...yea, I figured that the clear was really soft and even thinner just by looking at it. There's sadly a patch of cc failure around the antenna, and a few chips of cc-failure all around. And then while claying I found like pin-pricks of cc-failure and when I looked at all of the edges of the botypaint, it looks like they just cleared only what was seen, as you can actually see where the clear ends.

It kinda puzzles me how a car that was $63,000 when it came out, which is the equivalent of over 100k today, has a piss-poor clear and no powerseats, whereas my "economical" Baby Benz is older, but it's clear is obviously better and has power seats. Haha

But as for the '86-up SL's, I believe the '86-'87 had a 3rd brake light that was closer to the cockpit and more squarish in shape, and the '88-'89 had a more slender 3rd brake light closer to the rear.

Mine's an '88 by the way.

CDTGaticaW201- Ah, OK, an '88.

Funny, my SEC was an '88 and it had a *very* nice paintjob...but I got it before anybody else had been working on it much and I babied it. Yours might've been polished/etc. by somebody who didn't know how fragile they are.

Heh heh, you weren't paying for stuff like power seats or mirrors...you were paying for the build quality. The last Benz I'd ever be interested in was made in '91, it's that old-world craftsmanship and materials that I love. New ones might be "better" but for me they aren't the same.

On my Silver Metallic show car...

Clearkote Vanilla Moose

Optimum Car Wax - X2 or 3 depending on my time, and the reflectivity that I am getting from the paint

P21S Concours Carnuba (Using it up and then changing to Pinnacle Souveran)

QD with Pinnacle Crystal Mist...can't beat that combination for pop, wetness, and depth.

Thanks Darren...if you're talking about your 'Stang, I'll definitely have to take a look into that combo down the line. I'm not a fan of Mustangs, but yours is definitely classy and the paint looks immaculate.

Accumulator-

I definitely feel you about old-school MB workmanship...although occasionally I feel like they hired bodybuilding midgets to put them together, haha. I'm not as much of a fan of the newers MB's as the older classics. I mean, don't get me wrong...they're nice, but they're also dime-a-dozen...and those who own them nowadays just seem to own them because of the name, and don't care for them, or pamper them like they should. I've probably managed to turn more heads with my '85 and '88 Benzes than those newer C-classes and whatnot. People still can't believe my '85 is 21 years old, haha. I wish more care was put into the SL's paint, but once it's value begins to appreciate, I'll probably have it repainted properly.

BTW, does anyone know the difference between the the Prime formulas?

Prime Acrylic and AJT

Definitely one of my favorites on silver - appearance wise anyway. I'm still evaluating for durability but from what I've read on these forums I probably won't be disappointed.

Just curious...but why did you go with Prime Acrylic as opposed to Prime or Prime Strong? After reading up, I've been thinking about going with Prime Strong as a few members have suggested that it's stronger formula offers a wetter appearance and is easier to apply.

I'm really digging the way that combo looks on the paint...so wet and reflective. Durability isn't really an issue for me. I wash weekly and wax almost bi-weekly.

hmm...

Klasse All in One (old Formula)

Acrylic Jett Trigger

Finish Kare Pink Wax (2 coats)

quick detailed with Aqua Wax after a wash and FK 425 for the final anti static barrier

my next line up

Prime

Acrylic Jett

FK1 high temp 1000P paste wax.

Optimum Car Spray wax and Carnauba Gloss mixture

FK 425 (glass, vinly, wheels and paint)

p.s.

Car hadn't been wiped down for three days prior to this pic. :2thumbs:

Nice Porsche racingbeat!

Thanks you guys for all your help...I decided to pull the trigger on Prime Strong, Acrylic Jett: Trigger, and the Quick Wash. I was thinking about getting Acrylic Glos instead of QW, but I thought QW might me more useful. Too bad they don't have an Autopia discount...but it's still a pretty good deal for 52.80 shipped!

I picked Prime Acrylic because of the added durability over Prime and because I didn't need the added polishing agents of Prime Strong. I pretty much just wanted the Prime as a base/prep for the AJT not as a dedicated paint cleaner/polisher. Most times I'll use Meguiar's polishes to address any paint imperfections.

If you like to wax bi-weekly, then I think the Prime and AJT combo is just what you're looking for. AJT is very easy to apply and the results are great.
