Collinite V.O.C. Info Update

I inquired about V.O.C. regs & comparisons of #476s, #885, and #915 and received this response from Mike Oczkowski, Collinite Customer Service. Some comments reflect typical mfg bias but some useful information here:

"Because of the new VOC regulations we are going to have to tinker with of formulations. The only problem we might have is that the product might take a little longer to set up or dry, other than that the product will still outshine and protect better that other waxes.

I would recommend stocking up to be on the safe side. With the cold weather upon us, I recommend storing the product inside at room temperature."

"The #476s is supposed to be hard, sometimes they do come out a little on the soft side, but you would prefer it to be hard. The main thing is that all you need to protect the car is a thin layer of wax, you do not have to glob it on. If the water is beating up on the finish and running off while you are driving everything is fine.

The #476s and #885 are the exact same product, just a different size and lithographed can. The #915 basically comes from the same formula as the #476s & #885 but is has approximately 24% more carnauba wax and contains a coconut fragrance.

Appearance wise there isn't a major difference between

the #915 & #476s. I usually tell people the purchase the #476s to save money and still get a great car wax.

I do not have the carnauba % of these products available."

Sounds like they haven't started to produce the new formulations yet.

#855 is the Fleet Wax Right?

The guy recommends #476s over #915 because #476s is cheaper and still looks great. He also say #855 is exactly the same as #476s but in a bigger can. It sounds like #855 is the best deal.

I looked at their website and read the claim that their wax lasts a year! What have you guys REALLY been getting as far as durability? I love their old school tin containers!

chris: other's will have to chime-in with exact details but many have said that a layer or 2 of #476s will last 3 - 5 months, depending on severity of conditions.

Personally, I did 3x layers of #476s and it's still beading like crazy and feels very, VERY slick after 12+ washings and more than a few days of rain and/or wet snow ..... but no salt yet.

A lot of marine supply stores sell the FleetWax...it's a real bargain and quite a workout!

I still believe the IW is their best product when factoring in the various attributes.

Who sells Collinite online? Which should I try? I was thinking of the 476S. I am surprised I cant find Collinite on the large US online stores!

NYV6Coupe- Mike is a good guy and what he told you squares with what he told me.

eshine- Only thing that's ever lasted a year for me is six layers of KSG. But the 476S always lasts all winter and then some (a good four months) on a car that's outside 24/7. I find the durability pretty amazing, but you know one always has to  about a "once a year car wax" ;) Considering how great their product's durability *really* is, it's too bad they feel the need to exaggerate like that...

How would you describe the 476s? Would it be a topper product? Is it Carnauba like? They dont give too much info on their page :(

eShine- It *is* a carnauba Last Step Product. Whether it's a "beauty wax" is in the eye of the beholder. IMO it's not Souveran, but it sure doesn't look bad. The average car enthusiast certainly won't say "gee that wax looks crappy" or anything like that.

Thanks Accumulator! You would thik they would mention its a Carnauba on their site? I'm going to try some in the very near future, I love Carnaubas!

I assume not even the hyped Zai... lasted a year.

chris: I've asked specific questions about carnauba and non-carnauba content in their products without treading on "reveal your formula" type questions and I've only been able to learn that it's primarily a carnauba-based product.

Collinite products hang their hats on being durable and are not considered by many to be "beauty" waxes. As I've said before, my Accord is metallic silver & I think it looks fabulous and gets about as much shine & depth as silver can provide.

I've got 3x layers of #476s on top of 3x layers of FMJ for the winter & the water beads are tight, round, and tall.

I did a bit of Internet searching for people who use Collinite products for different reasons & found more than a few people in the South, South-East, and South-West who claim no other carnauba product holds up in the heat like Collinite but YMMV.

It may not be in the same category as AIO + UPP but it looks damn good to my "less than golden eyes" eyes.

Bottom line guys... if you live in a wintery climate and you want protection, slap on 2 layers of Collinite and be done with it.

You'll notice the same people chime in on every Collinite thread marveling at its durability (myself included :p)

I have spoken to Chris at Collinite and he has recommended the 476s over every other Collinite wax. He's very honest. He also likes to use 3M IHG under the Collinite (that is after you have properly polished).

It aint the prettiest wax in the world but if you LOVE beads than this is the wax for you!

I keep reading about Collinite not being a beauty wax. I have several coats of Insulator Wax on my silver car. I applied it over the 5 layers of SG I had on there for winter prep. When I buffed off the first layer of IW it was a big improvement over the SG. The gloss, shine, and depth was much better than SG.

IW is also VERY slick, right up there with UPP IMO. IW is also very easy to use. Spread very easy, a little goes a long way. Buffed of with no problems at all. IMO the only LSP I have used that is easier to use is S100 wax.

I haven't tried 476s yet but I think I will very soon.

The guy from Collinite is saying Fleet Wax is exactly the same as 476s. From what I have read 476s is not that much of a PITA if you use the wipe on wipe off method.

I really like Insulator Wax to. Haven't tried there paste wax yet.

Accumulator, Spilchy, have either of you used Fleet Wax?

nope, not me. IW and 476 is plenty for me :up

As the Collinte rep indicated, 476 is the best bang for the buck.

Get both! ;)

Yeah but Fleet Wax is supposed be excatly the same as 476s. I would like to know if anybody has tried both 476s and Fleet Wax and what they think about them. If they are the same than Fleetwax would be the best bang for the buck because of the larger size container.
