Collinite 845 on Exterior Trim

read a recommendation here for trying 845, worked out pretty good. I actually prefer the look of when it is wet (first pic). Second pic is buffed off.

Should I be buffing it off or can I just let it stay wet on there til it dries?

I prefer to buff it off right away, even though I generally do *NOT* do that even when it's the recommended technique. With trim, I pretty much do a wipe-on-wipe-off as I've had issues with residual product leaving the dreaded "white wax stains" even when it's a trim-friendly product like 845.

yeah i already had tons of those stains before i started. if i don't buff it off will it just get worse then? or does it lose that wet look even if i never buff it?

2000firebird- It'll lose a bit of the wet look, but it's worth it IMO since any staining from residual wax generally gets worse instead of better (at least IME). Eh, the trim I've 845ed looked plenty wet for my taste, but you may see things differently.

I have spoken with Collinite numerous times regarding 845 on trim. The consensus is still that it will react differently to different trims and different techniques used. It can also show staining a couple of days later, so it is hard to recommend when it is unpredictable.

Regardless, I have found it to work well for me on black trim. Heck, I even got 476 to work well on trim for a couple of months.

added some to my bay area as well. wire brushed a ton of grease off the shock towers. engine was wire brushed when i took off the upper/lower intakes. painted the rusted areas.

the stain on the side of the PS fluid (orange cap) and right of the intake lid (just below the orange cap) haven't come off and i've wiped them about 10 times. I think it was some kind of fluid that got on there, probably coolant.

any other recommendations on stuff I should do to it ?

2000firebird- Eh, I'm not seeing the PS cap  Oh, maybe I do.. But FWIW, sometimes plastics get stained and that's that. Can you just get another one from GM?

See how the paint holds up over the rusted areas. IF it doesn't stay OK, try the black Rust Encapsulator.

Oh, and instead of wire brushing grease/etc. away, I'd use a solvent and just *wipe* it away. Saturate a cloth and lay it on the area so it can dwell for a good long time.

not the actual cap but right below it.. youll see the long vertical housing. on the side it looks like theres a layer of dust sitting on it but it's wiped off. and right below that on the intake/radiator shroud is the same thing. i guess it wasn't as noticible as i thought. if the paint doesn't hold up i'll just redo it, it didn't take too long. i hit it with self etching primer too that i had left over from the painted intake manifold.

2000firebird- Might be totally different IRL from on internet pix. But I think I see it on some of those pieces.

See if a solvent helps. IF the finish is truly compromised then you're looking at refinishing or replacing. But sometimes a seemingly half-@$$ed approach can work really well; I've used AutoGlym Bumper Care on all sorts of underhood areas and it's worked out *MUCH* better than I ever expected it to. Much. From messed up black plastic, to bad satin/matte black paint, to oxidized alternator housings, to....well, you name it, that stuff has worked great for me even if it *is* the kind of "slimy dressing" that I usually say I hate.

My father just got a brand new Dodge Grand Caravan. I detailed it and used 845 on all the plastic trim surrounding the windows. Wipe , wipe off, looks great.

I'll reiterate that you probably want to wipe-on, wipe-off. I let it dry for about 10-15 minutes and it looked great when I first buffed it off. However by the next wash I could see white staining. So now I have to find a way to get the white off (APC and a brush didn't seem to do it) so I can prep it for Opti-Coat.
