Coating v. Wax (somewhat biased)

Whether you wax or coat, you still have to "spend hours polishing" if you want a truly corrected, defect-free finish. Didn`t really understand that point.

To me (the "novice/DIY/Weekend warrior" who just wants a clean, shiny, protected car), I view coatings as simply more durable waxes. I know I am grossly over-simplifying, but at the end of the day they are both just sacrificial layers to protect the clearcoat. Coatings do seem to be a bit more of a headache in re-application (at least to me). However, they seem to arguably protect better against light scratches and other calamities.

For me, FK1000p works just great, and I can always just slap on another coat of something else on top if I get bored. That being said, my wife`s next car will be coated for a sort of "set it and forget it" situation.

Looking forward to the responses.

The only one that I know for sure that needs to be "sanded off" then polished would be CS.

There may be others, but I`m sure there are others.

I haven`t done a single coating job.....yet

I would consider it for some cars, but not all.

I still kind of like hand applying a wax, though. :dunno:

I love wax too.

I just think it`s kinda biased because they are a wax co and do not offer coating, so he has to `bash` coatings.

I find the best method to be a healthy ratio of coatings to wax.... I chose 2 GTECH coatings (csl+exo) and 1 layer Polish Angel Gold Zirkon on top
call me indecisive

You kind of have to. Your Wax Wast....excuse me... Super Wax Waster Man!

Oh, no doubt. And who knows, maybe they`ll change their tune after they introduce their own coating.

If I can go thru the clear wit a microfiber pad, I can remove the coating. Now I`m a big believer in coatings, but I do miss and still enjoy just waxing cars!

My consern with coatings that are harder than clear is that they are harder than the clear. The physical properties of primer, paint and clear ensure that as they and the substrate heat up and expand they become elastic at the same rate. If the paint and clear are expanding and contracting at a different rate than a cured coating you could see accelerated damage at the interface between the clear and coating.

I`ll stick with toppers that are softer than the clear.

I agree with a lot of what he said but it definitely doesn`t require sanding to remove the coatings, even CS when it`s properly applied. I would much rather use a wax on a classic like he said but for new cars I`m all about coatings. At the end of the day, regular and proper maintenance is key for both of them.

Waxes, sealants, and coatings all have a place in a detailers` arsenal. One is not necessarily better/worse than the other, just different ways to protect and make paint shine.
