Coated leather

So I was reading somewhere on the internet that coated leather should not be treated with a leather conditioner. That the oils in the conditioner would not penetrate the coating and could acutally damage it - it stated that the best way to clean coated leather was to treat it like vinyl??? this true?

I don't believe that the oils or whatever will damage it, (I could be wrong) it just won't do anything for it as you stated and you will be wasting your time/product. People buy leather conditioners with mink oil or lanon thinking that this will improve the leather, but like you said being coated it will never penetrate through. For coated/finished leather I use a vinyl cleaner followed by 303.

What is the best way to tell between coated leather and the real thing. i'm going to do a 2001 Park Avenue. i have not seen the car yet but the owner says it has leather.

Finished/coated leather is dyed the desired color and finished so it does not readily absorb water or other liquids. (it will repel liquid) Auto upholstery and furniture are almost always finished/coated leather. Non-finished/non-coated leathers include deerskin, suede and chamois. If a drop of rain or liquid soaks in and makes a dark spot, it's not finished/coated leather.
