Clear Coat Flaked Off?!AHH!

I'm detailing my car today in the garage. Happier then heck! Finally a nice day to do it. Well I was claying the car and I see a circular crack the size of a quarter. I pushed on it and it was bubbled with water in it, then the clear coat came off:cry:. It's located on the passenger door (driver side) on the far left side. Right on edge. It still has great color all you can see is the edges that makes it noticeable. There's no rust on the back of the door or let alone any other part of the car.

I live in NE Ohio aka SnowBelt. I don't understand how it happened. I take pride in taking care of my car. I've had it for 1.5 years. It's an '00 Audi A4 Metallic Melange.

I appreciate it if somebody could help me. Could I use a cuting polish? I have SFX polishes & pads, and DAS pads. Or am going to have to sand? I have aerosal clear coat. Could I just scuff it and spray with the clear coat and then polish?

PLEASE HELP ME!

It is not easy to see from the picture but it sounds as if it could be clear coat failure. I believe you can reduce the visual impact but if it is a failurein the paint, you will need to respray

90% chance it was road salt because of location.

Sorry about the pick.

Would I have to get a sanding block and sand w/300 grit to smooth. Then spray with clear coat, then polish?

I'm no expert, so somebody correct me if I'm wrong, but 300 sounds a little agressive.

If it were my car, I'd start with something much less abrasive and go for the rough stuff if needed.

I have just discovered exactly the same thing on my Golf R32 front bumper.

Personally I think it is a failure of the clearcoat bonding to the base coat and I am going to seek professional advice from a couple of painters I know before talking to VW about a warranty repair.

My car was purchased in July 04, how old is yours?

VW's have a 10year paint and body warranty, I would be amazed if Audi doesn't.

If VW won't come to the party I will have the entire front bumper repainted as I don't see any other way of preventing it spreading.

Cheers

Dave.

We had the same thing happen on my brothers S-10 on the A-pillar and I very lightly wet sanded the area and the edge with 600 to feather it wiped it down with Prep-Sol and sprayed the area with clear from a rattle can .. then waited 20 min and gave it a second coat .. 3rd 20 min later and then I gave it a couple days and wet sanded with 2000 and buffed out with DACP.

Unless you actually knew it was there it was very hard to see and the truck was a Bugundy color .

That was over a year ago and it has held up very well with no problems.

Just watch when your sanding you need to scuff the base and feather the clear back but you don't want to go through the base.
