cleaning wheels

ok, my wheels are completely polished to a chrome finish. this weekend i wil be removing them to completely clean them and try to protect them as much as possible. what products should i use to protect? oh and just fyi, they are made of aluminum, so polished aluminum. so i don't think clay bar would work. i have been thinking of NXT all metal polish.. but should i put anything else as a sealant or anything? would wax work well?

I use Klasse AIO and SG on my wheels. Helps to keep the brake dust off. Wax would melt because of the brake heat. Or worse, the brake dust would melt into the wax and stick to the wheels.

what is sg? and klasse AIO is just the cleaner correct?

If your wheels are polished to a chrome finish then I don't think you need to do any more polishing to them. If you do need to polish them in the future I would use Mothers Mag and Aluminum polish. It works really well on aluminum that is in pretty good shape to begin with.

Klasse is the brand name it has two products one is AIO or All In One, it is a one step cleaner that also lays down some protection. SG or Sealant Glaze is their other product. It is a very durable sealant. For best results you need to use AIO then SG. You can also layer SG. By layer I mean you can put on one coat of SG and then after 24 hours you can put on another coat. For your polished aluminum wheels I would clean them then apply AIO and SG with multiple coats of SG for maximum durability.

Your original post says that your wheels are "polished to a chrome finish." Do you mean that they are highly polished alloy wheels, or that they are actually chrome plated alloy wheels? If they are polished alloy, then they may be clear coated, but if they are chrome plated, then the chrome will be the final finish. If they are chromed, then you will want to treat them with metal polish, etc., but if they are covered with clear coat, then you will want to treat them like any other painted surface. (ie., you wouldn't want to use a metal polish on them.)

I almost forgot, if they are highly-polished alloy wheels that are not chromed or clear coated, then I would second Sullybob's advice on using the Mother's Mag and Aluminum Polish. It has never let me down. I hope they turn out great!

yes, they are polished alloy wheels with no clear coat on them. they are a pain to keep clean. i bought the blue magic all metal polish before i read your posts. do you guys find that good or should i get the mothers polish instead? too bad klasse aio and sg aren't available at local stores like autozone :\

As a footnote to this discussion, while Mothers Mag & Alum Polish is excellent, Mothers Billet Polish will create a more polished finish due to the finer abrasives in it...much like polishing paint with IP or FP - both will polish out to a glossy finish but the finer abrasives in FP will create a higher level of gloss.

If the wheels are neglected use a mildly acidic spray cleaner to get the brake dust off, then polish with Billet.
