I have a 98 Ranger that's just shy of 50K on the clock. I don't think the engine since I bought the truck 2nd hand has ever seen a cleaning. It's starting to look really grimy, and dusty in there and I want to keep my engine in top shape. This will be my first time cleaning it and I don't want to harm anything electrical under there if I can help it. I know I need to cover up the basic electrical stuff such as the battery, alternator and computer, is there anything else I should cover up under there to protect it???? Or any advice and tips you guys may have, feel free to jump in. Tks all,,,,,,,,91

Jngrdbrds yer man for engine bays.

Seen him in action - looks good!

He used some sorta cleaning fluid concoction he made up and it seemed to work well.

Rinsed off with a small stream of water and wiped with some old cloths.

Dressed everything up with normal vinyl & rubber dressing and it looked pretty good to me.

HeH Well I had a strang scenario with engine detailing once I was detailing my dad truck I sprayed the engine down I had all the computer parts Coverd up. I used EF Hi-Intensity Cleaner When I noticed not steam but Blue smoke coming out of the Alternator I immeditly Un hooked the batterie and coverd the alternator with a towel to smuther it. I wasnt quite sure if anything was burning but it sure looked like it and it scared the crap out of me. Since then im super carefull with engine detailing the EF HI-Cleaner worked wonders though.

Here's what you need for engine bays....

1. trash bag

2. Simple Green

3. Old terry towels

4. Tire Dressing

5. Quick Detailer

Cover the alternator, computer and the ignition coils with the trash bag.

Soak the engine in Simple Green, let soak for 5 minutes. (warm engine but not HOT!)

Rinse with a VERY GENTLE stream of water. DO NO spray with hard pressure.

Wipe dry with terry towels.

Repeat this procedure as many times as necessary to get it clean. You may need to use a stiff brush on stubborn dirt. Wheel or spoke brushes work very well.

Final cleaning with QD and a soft towel or MF.

Dress plastic and rubber with tire dressing.

Done.

Do you cover everything with the QD or just the paint parts (David's article)?

Also what brush do you guys recommend for cleaning the engine?

I only QD the painted parts. Then all rubber and plastic get tire dressing.

I use 3 different brushes in the engine bay:

1. Detailing brush for dry use in the cracks and crevices of the engine bay.

2. Long-handle detailing brush for use in scrubbing Simple Green into rough textured areas such as the engine block.

3. Long-handle wheel/tire brush for stubborn dirt, grease and oil. (also used with Simple Green).
