Cleaning carpet with the nap laying the correct way when your finished

I have a 2002 Nissan Maxima with a dark gray/black cloth interior. I recently had it steam cleaned by the guy who comes once a month and does my house. I'm sure he got the dirt out but there are all these lines and what not that dont have any pattern to them. It makes the carpet and mats look 'matted down' in some spots. None of my friends really notice, but carpeting in a car is one area where I'm super pilly about. How do you guys clean your carpets and mats while making sure the nap has uniform texture and feel?

If you're talking about what I'm thinking, try just brushing the nap going the same direction. For example, after I scrub the carpets, I brush the nap forward. It makes the carpet look more "uniform" I guess. I see a lot of pics, though, where the guy would brush or vacuum stripes in the carpet. They look nice, but I can never get them right.
