My father's Mustang is starting to get some mildew on the top again. I've cleaned this thing several times but he insists on keeping it covered for weeks at a time when he isnt driving it and the mildew always seems to come back.
I've been using off the shelf convertible top cleaner you can buy from about anywhere but I dont think it's doing a good enough job for this situation. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be better? I see 303 makes a convertible top cleaner but I didn't see much feedback on it via the search function.
I'm also thinking of getting on of those portable steamers to clean the top with. That seems like it could be the ideal solution for cleaning the mildewed areas.
I've got a detailing job this weekend on a car with a dirty beige top and was thinking about what to do as well. I read David's write up and had little luck in the search. If anyone has anything to say I'd appreciate it as well.
Im really leaning towards picking up one of those Steam Sharks. I just got off the phone with a friend of mine who has one and he was raving about how great it is. Im thinking for that top it might be the best thing to use.
I had planned to put the brush attatchment on the Cyclo and scrub it with some sort of chemical but I'm really worried about damaging the stitching. Target has the Steam Shark in stock, maybe I'll pick one up and see how it does.
with the raggtopp I used a Oxio soft brush and did it about once a month with norlam soap and water in between and after 2+ years of daily exposure to AZ sun and dust my top looked brasnd new
Did you have any sort of mildew to contend with tho? The mildew is the problem for me, not cleaning the actual top. I need to get rid of the mildew and I dont want to scrub the threads out of the top trying to do that.
I had no mildew problem so I cannot speak to that however I would recomend contacting someone in your area that does tops and covers for boats or call West marine as I am sure they have seen mildew problems on boat tops and such all the time
I just recognized your avatar, I am assuming JayC stands for Jay Carter, if so great job on the t6p.com site and everything you've done for the Turbo Regal community. Keep up the good work:up :xyxthumbs
I have an S200 and I use the 303 cleaner when the top needs extra cleaning. I am very happy with the results. Normally I just use the normal wash water and a soft scrub brush fo nomal cleaning.
For protectent I love Wolfsteins Raggtopp. I have used 303 and vinylex. Raggtopp provides the least amount of wash off (which leaves a film on windows and paint) after a rain.
Raggtop. Followed by 303. I thought I'd kept my top in fantastic condition until I used that combo. I was awestruck at the difference. I use the 303 designed for vinyl, not cloth. I've got an MR2 Spyder that's now almost two years old and the top looks brand new!
From what I've read molds once they are started are difficult if not impossible to kill. I've heard a bleach/water solution does a great job killing it for the short term. Hope the top is white! Gotta think of a way to convince this guy not to cover the car for like a year or so!

I've used a week solution on my 70 Chevelle and 63 Nova but only when necessary and very weak like 25%. Also I'm sitting with a lot of water to wash it off quickly and only work on spot removal/very small areas with a tooth brush. One top is now 14 years old and the other is about 7 years old. I've probably done it a half a dozen times. I know it's not the smartest idea but desparate times needed desparate measures. If you're desparate I'd say give it a try but work in small areas 3 to 4 inches for about 20 seconds then thoroughly rinse all the way to the ground with each area.
