Cleaner waxes a thing of the past?

Hey Autopians.

It's been awhile, time flies and you know how it goes.

Anyway, haven't been back in a while and was wondering what people used for paint cleanser.

Do people only Dawn/Clay for Z (and or with a swirl remover)? What do you use to remove SMR residue or clay residue or otherwise? Do you just leave all the residue and go straight to the wax?

Basically I'm asking what you currently use for cleaner wax paint prep or other method of paint prep if you do (ie ABC) , and if you don't then why not?

Thanks, Steve-o

I use #20 almost exclusively now, and what I have found is that if I buff the SMR with MF's, there is very little residue, and I can just apply the #20 with no problems, since it has some mild cleaners in it.

Just noticed that you started posting again. Welcome back!

I have been wondering about this myself. I plan to use P21S to strip some sealant in the near future. Will I then need to do a Dawn wash to get the residue left by the P21S? Does P21S leave any residue?

I haven't had to deal with clay residue yet, but as a Klasse user I just go straight from SMR to AIO (which is like a cleaner wax I suppose). I did a friend's car and went from SMR to glaze to wax without any additional cleaning in between.

My logic behind this is that I have deduced that many polishes like SMR, #9, DACP, etc, already HAVE glaze in them to some degree. This makes the polishing job look better. So I figure it'd be counter-productive to attempt to strip them off prior to using a conventional wax.

It's hard to fit a separate paint cleaner in between somewhere since it has some overlapping function with a swirl remover, so I'm a bit undecided on that. It'd probably depend on if I was doing synthetic or natural wax.

If it's the P21S PPCL, I think it may leave some "residue", unlike other paint cleaners/pre-wax cleaners. People have reported it leaving the surface slick, not squeaky clean like my Mothers cleaner does. In chat discussion too, PPCL seems to have more in common with a glaze that cleans than a usual paint cleaner, so (personally) I would save this stuff for use in a non-synthetic wax job.

If I am going to use a paint cleaner I use PPCL.

For Z my base is down, will clay from time to time, then right back to Z5/2.

For my Klasse car I have been only using AIO.
