Clean Edge Detailed: Beautiful '71 Stingray major correction

Well this was a real treat! A guy was referred to me from someone that I guess has seen my work so after we finally touched base, he told me he had a corvette that was in DESPERATE need of a good detail. He explained the car had been repainted 3 times and the last time left it swirled beyond belief to the point where some of the paint was actually dull, literally dull. On top of that there were still LOTS of wet sanding marks all over the place. I asked him to bring the car over so I could see just how bad it was because I didn't want him spending money with me if it was beyond repair.

So he came by and sure enough, it was every bit as bad as he said it was. I decided to try a little test spot to see how much correction I could get and happily the test spot came out pretty good so he wanted me to go ahead with the detail. So a couple weeks later when a weekend was FINALLY free, he brought the car over. He said I could take all the time I needed so that was a good thing because like a lot of detailers I'm a "little" OCD when it comes to how I want the car to look when it's finished.

Over the next several days I just really took my time polishing out as much as I could. I even cleaned up the engine bay which he didn't ask me to do but you know, if it's dirty I need to clean it. This was NOT an easy detail as there were SO MANY scratches it just never ended. I used orange lc pads and ccs pads which I have decided SUCK. Also used some white lc pads too. I used Menzerna SIP and 106FF for the polishing followed by a couple coats of Danase Wet Glaze and Ultima Paint Guard Plus for the sealant.

I finally finished the car on Saturday and the gentlemen and his son, who owns the car, came to pick her up. We stood at my garage door and when the door when up and they both saw the car, there was a simultaneous "HOLY SH*T!" That of course felt good, assuming it was a good "HOLY SH*T" of course:). The son was in absolute shock that the paint was actually shining. He kept the car at his step mothers house I believe, he said he didn't even like looking at the car when he was there because the paint was so bad.

Also, they emailed me a newspaper article about how some lady had accidentally shot her suburban over a sidewalk, through a fence and into their garage where the vette was stored and the suburban sent the vette flying and smashed the hell out of it. Obviously they had it fixed up but that made me really want to make this poor thing look as good as I was able to. Over all I have to say it was a fun detail and the car did look amazing if I may say so. Such sexy lines on the car and seeing it all polished up was pretty awesome. Red was a really hard color for me to capture just how bad the car was and the pics do NO justice but hopefully you'll get the idea. The sun was going down when they picked the car up so I couldn't really get any sun shots but you should still get the idea. Enjoy....

I used the UDM

do you have experience with the PC ?? since the description says this bridges the gap between a PC and a rotary.... just wondering if you have a comparison opinion.

thanks

Nicely done! My friend has a '68 (I think) vette and has thought of having someone take a look at it. He said that he doesn't think there's even clear coat on it.

Great work. So why don't you like the CCS pads, just curious?

I've used ccs pads several times and I have never been impressed with their performance. Soon as I switch back to a regular LC pad, problem solved. The first time I thought it might be me but it happened over and over but again, as soon as I put LC pad on, the correction was perfect. So, I now just say no to ccs pads.

I have never used a pc or a rotary so I wouldn't know. I've always used the UDM which worked well but the quality of the machine itself was HORRIFIC to say the least. I blew through 3 of them in a year and just yesterday got the pc xp so we'll see how it goes. I've heard lots of good things so I'm looking forward to using it.
