i have some detailing clay and was wondering how many times can you use it? is there things you can do to keep it going like washing it somehow? or does dirt build up not a problem since you polish after

Once it's gone man, let it go. Because it ain't coming back....

Seriously - cut it up into smaller pieces and use one piece until it gets too dirty for use on the paint. Just keep in mind that whatever the clay picks up will most likely stay in the clay and you'll be "rubbing" that on the vehicle finish everytime you use that clay.

Re: clay

most vehicles that i get have never been clayed before and you can tell how nasty it gets after one use, and yes whatever bars u have cut in small pieces and bag up each piece tightly sealed for later use. example my mothers gold kit lasted me about 4-5 cars worth and the bar they gave me was TINY .

for me i use a piece when flattened down in the palm of my hand is about 2-3 inches by 2-3 inches and should fill the whole palm roughly and when u roll in a little ball it should cupple right in the middle of your palm and look almost like a marble u played with when u were a kid but not those big big ones the medium sized i guess ...

i just got riccardo clay and has two bars and should last me maybe up to 10 cars i bet !

hope this helps !

Re: clay

Clay can be cleaned to get more life out of it. Rick at Four Star showed me this. You can hit it with an all purpose and get rid of a lot of the junk built up in it. Rinsing thoroughly. The all purpose just can't be allowed to dwell or it will deteriote the clay.

Re: clay

Out of my Meguiars Clay kit, with the two small grey bars, I can probably do 8 cars. Each bar I cut in half, and do about two cars per half. I save the bars after the two cars and use them atleast once to do a set of wheels. So one bar is 4 cars and 8 wheels to me.

+1 Not to mention when you get "fumble fingers" and drop the clay to the ground.

Live and learn. Never heard of this. Does this method also take care of the harder contaminants such as sap?

I clay during the wash, so I will occasionally dip the bar into the wash bucket just for some added lubrication, but never thought of it as cleaning the clay.

It's not a habit of mine but I have seen Rick clean quite a bit of brake dust right out of the clay by hitting it with his APC and massaging the surface of the clay while rinsing it in the sink. This is before you have remolded the clay. Once you remold the clay cleaning it won't be near as effective. That's why I don't do it myself. I don't want to stop and clean the clay before remolding it for a new section but it can be done to a certain extent.
